Lhotse Expedition- 8,516 m - 60 Days

Lhotse Peak is the world’s 4th-highest peak, located in the Solukhumbu Region of Nepal. It is a neighbouring peak to Mt. Everest (8,848.86 m). Lhotse shares the border between Tibet, China and Nepal, and the standard climbing route is from Nepal. 

On this Lhotse Expedition, we follow the Everest Base Camp trekking trail and reach up to Base Camp (5,364 m). Then, before starting our climbing journey, we perform puja by following the local Sherpa tradition. Sherpas consider mountains their home, and puja helps, so it is performed to seek blessings and spiritual protection.

From Base Camp, we will do an acclimatization rotation for several weeks before making the summit push. It allows our bodies to adapt to the lower oxygen levels, understand the route, challenge, and prepare for the demanding climb.

When our expert Sherpa guide identifies a suitable weather window, we commence our summit push. Starting from Base Camp (5,364–5,400 meters), we ascend through several camps: Camp I (5,900–5,943 meters), Camp II (6,400–6,500 meters), and Camp III (7,100–7,300 meters) before finally reaching Camp IV (7,800–7,920 meters).

Above the Yellow Band, a prominent section of golden limestone on the upper Lhotse Face, the routes to Everest and Lhotse diverge. Everest climbers head toward the South Col, while we continue along the Lhotse route toward Camp IV and tackle the steep upper Lhotse Couloir. We navigate through this challenging section as we make our way to the summit of Lhotse, which stands at 8,516 meters.

From the top of Lhotse, it rewards climbers with a breathtaking close view of mighty Mount Everest( Sagarmatha). Also, a panoramic view of surrounding peaks like Nuptse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and Ama Dablam is visible. When you look below, a bird’s-eye view of Khumbu Glacier, Western Cwm, and surrounding high-altitude valleys also surrounds you.

Then, you will safely descend back to Base Camp, trek to Lukla Airport, fly to Kathmandu, and conclude your Lhotse Peak Expedition.

First ascent: On May 18, 1956, Swiss climbers Ernst Reiss and Fritz Luchsinger became the first people to summit Lhotse Peak.

Lhotse Expedition Difficulty

Difficulty level: TD (Très Difficile / Very Difficult) to ED (Extrêmement Difficile / Extremely Difficult)

Lhotse Peak is a highly technical peak with 80% of the route sharing to mighty Mt. Everest. The biggest challenge of this expedition is to cross the Khumbu Icefall, steep Lhotse Face, and ascending the upper Lhotse Couloir toward the summit.. As we approach the summit from the Geneva Spur, we need to encounter 50- to 60-degree steep ice and snow. Also, the death zone is the biggest factor that makes every expedition difficult, including Lhotse Climbing. 

Apart from the technical challenge, the changing weather, extreme cold, exposed terrain, and the knife-edge summit ridge are real threats. Lhotse has a success rate of approximately 42% through commercial guided programs. Many climbers also attempt Lhotse after climbing Mount Everest, as the two mountains share a substantial portion of their lower route.

Preparation Tips for Lhotse Expedition

Climbing the 4th highest peak in the world requires serious preparation, dedication, and discipline. Climbers need to train consistently for years, building endurance, strength, technical skills, and mental resilience. 

Before climbing the 8,000-meter peak in Nepal, it is recommended to climb at least one 6,000- or 7,000-meter peak like Tilicho Peak (7,134 m). A pre-altitude climb in Nepal helps foreign climbers get to know the Nepalese Himalayan weather and climbing techniques.

Although thorough preparation does not guarantee a successful summit, it helps climbers avoid preventable mistakes and reduce risk. The mountains leave little room for error. So train well, take mountaineering courses, build confidence, and most importantly, respect the mountain.

Best Time for Lhotse Expedition

The most favourable season for the Lhotse Expedition is during the months of spring and autumn. In spring, particularly April and May is the climbing season for Lhotse. During these months, you can expect suitable conditions for high-altitude climbing. The reason is long daylight hours, moderate temperatures, and stable weather conditions.

Another climbing season is during the autumn season, particularly in September and October. The climbing route is less crowded, and the clear sky allows you to enjoy a magnificent view of mountain peaks. 

No matter which season you choose, the perfect window for climbing depends on favorable weather and route conditions.

Required Permit and Documents

All climbers need to obtain this mandatory permit for the Lhotse Peak Expedition:

1. Lhotse Peak Royalty Fee
2. Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit
3. Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality

Note: To obtain the climbing permit, insurance with helicopter evacuation is mandatory as per Department of Tourism. High Route Adventure will arrange all these permits.

Accommodation: Teahouse and Tent

• Teahouse Phase (Trekking Portion): From Lukla to Gorakshep, there are teahouses along the trekking route. These teahouses are established to provide visitors with lodging and food facilities. The Teahouse has facilities for sharing rooms with warm blanket, twin beds. Wifi, Charging and hot shower is available but at an extra price.

• Tented Camp Phase (Climbing Portion): From Everest Base Camp and above, climbers need to stay in an established tent setup by our expedition team. Individual sleeping tents, a communal dining tent, and communication facilities are provided at the camps.

Food and Meals: What To Expect

Meals in the Lower and Base Camp Areas (Tea Houses)

• Traditional staple: Dal Bhat (rice, lentil soup, vegetables, and pickles) is climbers' favourite. There is a local saying: "Dal Bhat power, 24 hours". Also, Sherpa Stew, Thukpa, Momos, Tibetan Bread, and Dhindo are available.
• Western and carb options: Items like pasta and macaroni, spaghetti, noodles, fried rice, pizza, burgers, and potatoes are widely available.
• Breakfast choices: Porridge, pancakes, sandwiches, bread, eggs, and hot drinks like tea or coffee help start the morning.

Meals at High Camp (Tented Camping)

• Crew-cooked food: Our dedicated kitchen team will prepare the simple yet nutritious meals for you. Three meals will be provided, which will be easy to digest and highly- carbohydrate.
• Decreasing variety: Don't expect a wide variety like in a teahouse. Expect simple meals, as food and ingredients are difficult to take to difficult transport logistics.
• Hydration and soup: For hydration and energy, we will provide you with warm soup and plenty of fluids. 

Altitude Sickness and Acclimatization Tips

During the Lhotse Expedition, altitude sickness is serious and can be life-threatening if we neglect Acute Mountain Sickness(AMS). Above the Lhotse Couloir at 8,000 meters, climbers enter the “Death Zone,”. Here, the oxygen level is one-third (30% to 33%) of that at sea level. Most climbers need supplemental oxygen at this level. 

Normally, from Camp II we use an oxygen bottle during the climbing phase. On average, 4 to 6 oxygen bottles are used by climbers. Even with supplemental oxygen, the chance of hypoxia, frostbite, hypothermia, dehydration, exhaustion, and other altitude-related complications remains. So you need to be very careful, especially when you are in a death zone. Monitor your health conditions all the time and inform your climbing guide immediately if you find any health issues.

About Lukla flight and its alternative

The common way to enter the Khumbu Region for the Lhotse Peak Expedition is by taking a flight to Lukla from Kathmandu. Normally, there is a regular flight from Kathmandu, but sometimes, to avoid traffic, the flight might be diverted to Ramechhap Airport. Another thing that climbers need to keep in mind is that the Lukla flight is weather-sensitive. The flight operates only during the best weather conditions. If the weather continues to be poor, an alternative helicopter flight may be arranged, depending on availability and suitable weather conditions. Additional payment is required for this service.

Emergency Rescue and Insurance

As we know, unforeseen situations can happen at any time in the mountains. To deal with such conditions, we will provide you with an expert Sherpa team. They know how to handle emergency situations and provide appropriate support during the journey. 

All climbers must have a comprehensive insurance policy that must cover:

• High-altitude coverage: Must explicitly cover mountaineering up to 8,516 meters or higher.
• Search and rescue: Minimum coverage of USD 100,000–250,000 for search and rescue services.
• Helicopter evacuation: Must cover emergency helicopter evacuation from high-altitude areas.
• Altitude-related illnesses: Coverage for AMS, HAPE, and HACE.
• Mountain injuries: Coverage for trauma, frostbite, hypothermia, and other mountaineering-related injuries.
• Medical treatment: Coverage for emergency hospital treatment and related medical expenses.
• Repatriation: Coverage for emergency medical evacuation and repatriation to your home country when required.

Environmental / Responsible Expedition Practices

Himalayan peak ecosystem is fragile, and global warming is affecting it so much now. As climbers, we have our own responsibility. So make sure to follow these things during your journey:

• Bring down your human waste from the mountain
• Avoid littering and polluting by throwing waste in designated areas.
• Do not disturb wildlife, vegetation, or natural surroundings.
• Respect local culture, traditions, religion, and their way of life.
