Check If this Mt Kilimanjaro Climbing Suits You?

Whether you are a beginner trekker or an experienced climber, climbing Mt Kilimanjaro is full of adventure and fun. However, because of its moderate difficulty, it is still a physically and mentally challenging climb. Before you book a Mt Kilimanjaro package, check these factors whether it suits you or not:

1. Physical Fitness: While technical climbing skills are not necessary (it’s a non-technical trek) for this Mt Kilimanjaro peak, the altitude (5,895 meters) and long daily hikes (4–8 hours) demand preparation.

2. Climbing Experience: To participate in this adventure, you don’t need previous mountaineering experience. But you need to have some high-altitude hiking or trekking background to increase your chances of success.

3. Age Requirements: Although there is no age limit, it is best suited for those above the age of 18.

4. Health Considerations: Participants with heart disease, severe asthma, or uncontrolled hypertension should avoid the climb. It’s best to do a Pre-Climb Checkup and submit the report to your tour operator.

5. Travel Insurance: To join Mt Kilimanjaro with High Route Adventure, you must provide proof of travel and health insurance.

Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro Via Machame Route

The best time to participate in Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing via Whiskey Route is in the month of the dry season of January- March and June-October. During this time, you can enjoy the clear skies and breathtaking panoramic views from the summit and the surrounding landscape. Also, during this time, you can expect minimal rain.

During January and February, the snowfall at the summit creates iconic photo opportunities, but there will be fewer travellers during this time. June through August is an excellent time due to favourable trekking conditions with a larger number of hikers on the Machame Route. October is also an excellent time for those who want to experience a peaceful trail, as the northern side of Machame tends to remain drier.

We suggest our participants avoid the rainy season of April- May and November. During this rainy season, you can expect heavy rainfall, which makes the trekking trails muddy and slippery. Also, due to low visibility, it makes trekking difficult and dangerous.

Please note that even in the dry months, the weather at high altitude can be freezing, so we request all our travellers to carry proper climbing gear and equipment.

Whether you choose the peak climbing season or quieter months for climbing Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route, it will be rewarding and adventurous.

Note: As per the official record, we have seen high demand during Christmas/New Year. So if you are planning to do Kilimanjaro during this time, we suggest you book the package 2-3 months in advance.

FAQs of Kilimanjaro Climb via Machame Route

  • How difficult is climbing Kilimanjaro?

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is considered a challenging trek, but it is achievable when participants prepare themselves physically with moderate to high levels of fitness. Even though there is no technical part or mountaineering skills required, the main difficult factor is the high altitude and long trekking duration( 6-9 hours). Trekkers need to walk on a steep trail to the summit at midnight, and it lasts 6-8 hours in cold and thin air.
  •  Are there any age limits for climbing Kilimanjaro?

There is no official age limit for climbing Kilimanjaro, but climbers should be in good health and physically fit. This trek is best suited for people aged above 18. We have seen people in their 60s, 70s, and even older have successfully summited Kilimanjaro. If you are old climbers, we request that you consult with a doctor before attempting to climb. In this, Kilimanjaro, fitness and health matter more than age.
  • Why is a guide necessarily? I've trekked/hiked/camped before - can't I guide myself?

Even if you are an experienced trekker, it is compulsory to hire a certified guide for all climbers for Kilimanjaro climbing. This is due to TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks Authority) regulations, which apply to everyone without exception. There are several important reasons for this: Safety: A guide will be provided to you are trained for high altitude related problems like altitude sickness and other medical emergencies. Navigation: The trail can be challenging to follow, especially in poor weather, low visibility, and during the darkness of the summit night. Logistics: Your guide will coordinate with porters, cooks and park rangers, manage permits and make sure every climber follows the park rules. Experience: They know the terrain, weather patterns, and best acclimatization practices.
  • Is previous trekking experience essential?

Previous trekking experience is not strictly required, but it is highly recommended due to the challenging nature of the trek. For the first time or beginner trekker who has not done the long hours of trekking previously at high altitude can be extremely difficult and risky. Walking for 6-9 hours is a really tough job, so only participate in this trek if you meet physical and fitness requirements.
  • What should I pack for my trip?

Before travelling, make sure you have a valid passport and a minimum validity of 6 months from the date of travel. Bring water purification tablets, warm clothing, a down jacket, water proof jacket, trousers, trekking boots, gloves and other essential items.
  •  What's the best time of year to book a trek in Kilimanjaro?

The best times to climb Mount Kilimanjaro are during the two main dry seasons: January to March – This is a popular trekking time for the Kilimanjaro climbing due to clear skies and cold night temperatures. You can witness occasional snow at the summit, and the trail remains less muddy during this time. June to October – This is the most recommended time to do the Kilimanjaro climbing due to the longer dry season. You can expect stable weather, clear views and favourable trekking conditions.
  • I am landing in Nairobi. How do I get to Kilimanjaro?

There are two main options from Nairobi, Kenya, if you want to reach Kilimanjaro. The first one is to take the road transportation( bus) that connects Nairobi and Moshi or Arusha (Tanzania). Another is by taking a direct flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), located about 40 km from Moshi (the main gateway town for Kilimanjaro climbs). Flight is the most convenient way to reach the Kilimanjaro starting trekking point.
  • Are any permits required for climbing Kilimanjaro?

Yes, all the travellers heading for climbing Kilimanjaro must obtain the national park permit. This permit fee offers park entry, conservation, camping or hut use (depending on the route), and rescue services. When you book the tour package with us, we will handle all permit logistics, and the cost of permits is also included.
  • Do I Need a Visa? How to obtain the visa?

Yes, you will need a Tanzanian entry visa (the cost depends on your nationality), which can be requested online or at Kilimanjaro Airport upon landing.
  •  What type of insurance should I have? Where can I obtain a policy?

You must have comprehensive travel insurance that includes the following coverage for a Kilimanjaro climb: High-altitude trekking (up to 5,895 meters / 19,341 ft) Emergency medical evacuation (helicopter rescue is common and extremely expensive) Trip cancellation or interruption Medical expenses and hospitalization in Tanzania. Lost or delayed baggage
  • How long does it take to climb Kilimanjaro?

Usually, it takes around 5-9 days to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. The exact date depends upon the route chosen and the climber's experience and acclimatisation needs. Most of the climbers choose this 8-day itinerary because it provides better acclimatization and higher success rates.
  • How long do we spend walking each day?

Daily hiking time varies depending on the route and day of the trek: Regular trekking days: 4 to 6 hours of walking. You will adjust your body to the increasing altitude and take several breaks to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Summit night: The final push to Uhuru Peak takes about 6 to 8 hours (usually starting around midnight) Descent days: 4 to 7 hours, often longer due to fatigue and terrain
  • What kinds of accommodations are available on Kilimanjaro?

During the ascent to the summit of Kilimanjaro, we will do camping. The High Route Adventure will set up the tent. There will be separate tents for sleeping, cooking tents, and latrine blocks. Most trekkers find the camps very comfortable as tents are spacious. We will also provide you with a sleeping mattress.
  • Will my mobile phone work? What about internet access?

You can buy a physical Sim, esim or mobile data card in Moshi for internet access. Cellular network (Airtel, Vodacom, Tigo, Halotel, Zantel) works well in Moshi/Arusha and up to the Machame Gate (≈1,800 m). Coverage becomes spotty from Mawenzi Hut onward; most signals disappear above 14,000 ft. Our team always carries walkie-talkies to update about the journey at Base Camp.
  • Can I charge my phone or camera during the trek?

There is no charging facility available during the Kilimanjaro climbing. So carry the high-capacity powerbank or solar panels to charge cameras and phones.
  • Should I tip my guide? How about my porter?

There is no customary tipping requirement, but it is common practice to give tips to guides and porters to show appreciation and support the local economy. We suggest you give tips of around USD 100 - USD 150 per person and tell them to distribute among the entire team who helped you during the Kilimanjaro climbing.
  • How much money should I bring along?

Most of the things will be included in the package. You will require money for extra things like Visa, International flight, Tips, Personal expenses (snacks, souvenirs, laundry) and emergency cash (medicine, extra food, contingency). We recommend carrying around USD 500- 1000 in cash for these expenses.
  •  What communication options exist while trekking?

Since Wifi and mobile networks do not work at high altitudes during the climbing, our team will be equipped with Walkie‑Talkies to communicate with our Base Camp in Moshi to provide the ground update about the status.
  • What if I end my climb early?

We don't want this situation to happen for any of our visitors, but if it happens for any reason, we will provide you with a guide and porter to escort you to your hotel at Moshi or any other nearby option.
  • What is your cancellation policy? How about other terms and conditions?

To book the package, an initial deposit of 20% non refundable payment should be made. The rest of the amount can be paid before you start your trip. In case of natural disasters, political unrest, or pandemics, we reserve the right to reschedule the trip by sending you a notice through mail or whatsapp.
