Overview

Chhukung Ri Climbing Overview

Chukkung Ri is 5,550 meter(18208ft) Peak located in the Khumbu Region of Nepal. Situated above the Chhukung Village, it is a non-technical peak. It provides a wonderful high-altitude summit experience in the Everest region. From the summit of this peak, it rewards trekkers with a grand view of surrounding peaks, including Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse.

While many people focus on the Everest Base Camp (EBC) and Kala Patthar treks, the Chhukung Ri trek is gaining popularity. Its challenging ascent, accessible route, and spectacular Himalayan scenery make it an excellent choice for trekkers.

The Chhukung Ri climbing covers approximately 65 to 70 km (40 to 43 miles) in total. The journey begins in Kathmandu with a scenic flight to Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla.

From Lukla, the trail passes through Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Nepal. Then, you will follow scenic trails through beautiful forests, lush green hills, charming villages, and mountain rivers. Along the route, there are plenty of mountain lodges to stay at, which are surrounded by mountain scenery and peaceful nature.

Before ascending toward the Chukkung Ri, we made acclimatization stops in Namche and  Dingboche to make adjustments to the higher altitude. The carefully planned itinerary allows visitors to enjoy the breathtaking Himalayan scenery without rushing at a manageable pace.

This guided tour package is suitable for both beginners and first-time trekkers who are physically fit and have good stamina.

Things to Know

Notes

How difficult is Climbing Chhukung Ri?

Chhukung Ri is graded as "moderately difficult" in terms of difficulty level. Standing at approximately 5,546 meters (18,196 feet), the peak is not extremely high and does not require technical climbing skills. However, here are some of the challenging factors that you need to consider before climbing:

  • High altitude: Reaching the summit of 5,546 increases the risk of altitude sickness. When trekkers catch altitude sickness, they may experience headache, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue. These early symptoms are curable, but once they turn into HACE and HAPE, it can be life-threatening.
  • Weather and Wind: At high altitude, the strong winds and changes in the weather can trouble the trekkers. Temperature can drop significantly, which can result in heavy snowfall, freezing conditions, poor visibility, and snow-covered trails.
  • Physical demand: Steep uphill sections, rocky and uneven terrain, long walking hours, and high altitude make this trek physically tough. Trekkers need to prepare themselves by building endurance, cardio and strength before the journey.
  • Steep Summit Section: The most challenging part of the entire journey is the summit push. It typically takes about 5 to 7 hours for the round trip, which includes both the ascent to the summit and the return to Chhukung. Reaching the summit safely requires careful footing, a favorable weather window, and steady pacing along with high stamina.

Best Time for Chhukung Ri Trek

The best weather window for the Chhukung Ri Trek is during the spring and autumn seasons. In spring March to May), the trekking season begins with the blossom of rhododendron forest. As the season progresses, the trail slowly becomes dry and favourable for trekking. Mountain views are clear in the morning, but in the afternoon the cloud formation can block the views and reduce visibility.

Another best time for the Chuukung Ri Trek is in autumn(September to November). Perfect weather, good visibility, fresh mountain views after the monsoon, and minimal rainfall make it favorable for trekking. Dashain and Tihar festivals also fall during this season, to witness Nepal's rich culture and traditions.

Eco-friendly Chukkung Ri Trek

Chukkung Ri passes through the fragile Himalayan ecosystem of Sagarmatha National Park. So, responsible trekking is important for the conservation and protection of nature and local communities. Global warming is increasingly affecting the Himalayas, causing melting glaciers, changing snowfall patterns, and flash floods. Therefore, trekkers play a big role in minimizing the environmental impact by avoiding littering, carrying reusable water bottles, minimizing single-use plastics, and disposing of waste properly.

Always stay on the standard trekking trails. Respect local customs, wildlife, and natural surroundings. Choose the teahouse and support local communities for sustainable tourism practices.

Permits and Requirements

To participate in the Chukkung Ri trek, trekkers are required to obtain both the Sagarmatha National Park Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Permit. Please note that the TIMS card is no longer necessary. We will handle the application and processing of these permits for you. After making your booking, kindly send us a scanned copy of your passport along with passport-sized photographs.

Accommodation and Food During the Trek

There are enough teahouses on the trekking routes of Chukkung, as it follows much of the Everest Base Camp trail. This teahouse provides a comfortable place to stay and rest after a long day of trekking. Here you can find basic rooms, shared bathrooms, dining areas, and a variety of meals. Popular Nepali dishes such as Dal Bhat, Momos, Chowmein, and Thukpa are commonly available, along with tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and other beverages.

High Route Adventure will book the room with twin-sharing beds for you and arrange three meals during the trek. You can choose the meal from the teahouse menu.

Safety and Acclimatization

For a safe journey, High Route Adventure will provide you with a professional Guide and porter for support. However, for a safe and successful summit, trekkers also need to follow safety and acclimatization tips.

  • Acclimatize Properly: Take enough rest at Namche and Digbonche to allow your body enough time to adjust to the increasing altitude.
  • Walk at a Steady Pace: Avoid rushing; walk at your own pace.
  • Stay Hydrated: Carry a water bottle with you and drink enough water to avoid dehydration.
  • Listen to Your Body: Monitor your health conditions, and if you experience any symptoms of altitude sickness, inform your guide immediately.
  • Dress for Changing Weather: Carry warm, windproof, and waterproof layers to protect against sudden changes in mountain weather.
  • Follow Your Guide's Advice: Stay with the trekking group and follow your guide's instructions during the summit climb.
  • Be Careful on Rocky Sections: Use proper trekking shoes and watch your footing on steep, loose, or rocky sections.
  • Know When to Turn Back: Prioritize safety if weather worsens.

Travel Insurance for Chhukung Ri Trek

For financial protection and emergency support during the trek, we recommend that trekkers have an insurance policy that covers:

  • High-altitude trekking: Up to 5,550 meters.
  • Emergency helicopter evacuation: Rescue and evacuation costs.
  • Medical expenses: Treatment for illness or injury.
  • Hospitalization: Emergency hospital and medical care.
  • Trip cancellation: Cancellation due to covered emergencies.
  • Trip interruption: Expenses caused by an unexpected interruption.
  • Lost or delayed baggage: Compensation for covered baggage issues.
  • Emergency repatriation: Transportation home when medically necessary.

Lukla Flight and Alternative Transportation

Lukla flight is the safest and most convenient way to reach the lukla to begin your trekking journey. But what trekkers should understand is Lukla flight is diverted during the peak trekking season to Ramechhap Airport to adjust flight traffic. If your flight departs from Ramechhap, be prepared for a 5 to 6 hour drive from Kathmandu to Ramechhap. We arrange the local bus for you, which departs from 1:00 AM to 1:30 AM. If you prefer a private vehicle, please note that an additional cost will apply at the time of booking.

Traveler Reviews

What Our Customers Say

Real experiences shared by trekkers and travelers who joined our trips.

Haruto, Japan

I chose Chhukung Ri specifically because I wanted a high vantage point without needing technical mountaineering skills, and it delivered exactly that. The trail is demanding — narrow, rocky, and exposed to strong wind near the top — but manageable with good preparation and a steady pace. Reaching the summit and seeing Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu aligned along the horizon was a deeply moving experience.

The quiet of Chhukung village itself, away from the busier Base Camp trail, added to the sense that we had found something special. I would tell any fellow trekker from Japan considering the Everest region: build in the extra day for Chhukung Ri, because the memory of that sunrise summit is one you will not forget.

Ivan, Russia

Chhukung Ri was the perfect blend of physical challenge and visual reward. The climb starts gently through the Chhukung valley before turning into a steep, energy-sapping push toward the summit ridge, and at that altitude even slow steps take real effort. When we finally reached the top, the sight of Ama Dablam’s sharp pyramid and the massive Lhotse face made every difficult breath worthwhile.

I’ve trekked in several mountain ranges, but few views compare to standing on Chhukung Ri at sunrise, surrounded by peaks over 8,000 metres in nearly every direction. Our guide’s knowledge of the terrain and pacing kept the group safe and confident throughout, and I left the Khumbu already planning a return trip to attempt Island Peak next.

Lukas, Switzerland

As someone who grew up hiking in the Alps, I came to Chhukung Ri expecting a pleasant walk with a nice view. What I got instead was a proper test of endurance at altitude, and one of the finest panoramas I’ve seen anywhere on earth. The route from Chhukung climbs steadily over rock and moraine, and the final scramble to the top rewards you with an unobstructed sightline across the Lhotse-Nuptse wall.

I appreciated that our itinerary built in enough time in Chhukung to acclimatize properly before the ascent, which made a real difference to how strong I felt near the top. Compared to summits I’ve stood on in the Alps, Chhukung Ri holds its own entirely — it simply belongs in a different league of scale and remoteness.

Valentina, Argentina

Coming from the Andes, I thought I understood high altitude, but Chhukung Ri taught me something different about the Himalayas. The thin, dry air combined with the sheer scale of the surrounding peaks made every step above 5,000 metres feel earned in a way I hadn’t experienced before. The summit itself is small and unassuming, yet the view it offers of the Lhotse wall and Ama Dablam is unforgettable.

Our small group set out well before dawn, and watching the first light hit the summit of Everest from that ridge was worth every cold, breathless minute of the climb. I’ve since recommended Chhukung Ri to several climbing friends back home as one of the best non-technical high-altitude viewpoints in the world.

Giulia, Italy

I climbed Chhukung Ri as an add-on to the Everest Base Camp trek, and it turned out to be the highlight of the entire trip. The trail from Chhukung is short in distance but relentless in gradient, winding through loose scree and frozen ground before opening onto a ridge with a jaw-dropping 360-degree view. Seeing Island Peak so close, with Makalu visible in the distance, was a moment I will carry with me forever.

The support from our trekking team made all the difference – proper rest days in Chhukung, warm tea waiting at the lodge, and honest advice about turning back if altitude sickness set in. I never needed to. For anyone debating whether to add this side trip to their itinerary, my answer is simple: do not skip Chhukung Ri.

Etienne, France

Chhukung Ri exceeded every expectation I had before arriving in the Khumbu. The final push above Chhukung village is steep and the air is thin at over 5,500 metres, but the moment you reach the summit ridge and see Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam standing together, the effort disappears completely. Our guide paced us perfectly for acclimatization, and I never once felt unsafe despite the altitude.

What struck me most was how this peak is often overlooked compared to Kala Patthar, yet the panorama here felt even more intimate and dramatic. I would recommend Chhukung Ri to any experienced trekker who wants a genuine high-altitude challenge without needing technical climbing gear. It is, without doubt, one of the most rewarding sunrise views I have ever earned with my own legs.
