Mr Prakash arranged the horse for my mother as she could not walk much. My whole family loved travelling with Highroute Adventure for the Kailash tour.
Experience a divine journey of a lifetime with our exclusive Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Nepal. This all-inclusive 16-day Kailash tour takes pilgrims close to Mt Kailash for Kailash Darshan and a visit to the holy Mansarovar Lake. It is believed that performing this spiritual tour in Tibet brings moksha, spiritual purification, and awakening. Visitors will perform sacred Kailash Kora(circumambulation), which is 52 – kilometer pilgrimage around Mount Kailash(6,638 meters).
This sacred pilgrimage begins with a Kathmandu Sightseeing Tour. It includes visits to the famous Pashupatinath Temple and the Budhanilkantha Temple. It is believed that offering prayers provides pilgrims with strength and guidance for their journey ahead.
From Kathmandu, the journey continues with a scenic drive towards Timmure, the gateway to Tibet. During the drive, you will pass through Syabrubesi, which is the starting point for the famous Langtang Valley trek. From Timmure, after completing immigration formalities, you will cross the border into Tibet.
From here driving adventure in Tibet starts under the guidance of the Tibetan guide and driver. Passing through Kerung and Saga towns, you will reach Lake Mansarovar. It is believed that Lord Brahma created this holy lake as a symbol of purity and divine creation.
Completing the Manasrovar Lake circumambulation by drive, we ride toward Darchen. Now, it’s time to perform the Kailash Parikrama, passing through the challenging Dolma La Pass (5,630m). The Parikrama around Mt. Kailash, the sacred abode of Lord Shiva, takes three days to complete.
We have carefully crafted this 16-Day Kailash Mansarovar Yatra itinerary to make this journey smooth, comfortable, and memorable.
This year’s Kailash Mansarovar Yatra carries a significance that goes beyond the journey itself. According to Tibetan tradition, 2026 is a Fire Horse Year. This cycle returns only once every twelve years and is believed to amplify the spiritual energy of Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar many times over.
Completing the Kailash Kora in a Horse Year is said to be 12 to 13 times more meritorious than in an ordinary year. For pilgrims who have long dreamed of this journey, there is simply no better time to go. The next opportunity will not arise until 2038.
Adding to the auspiciousness, the 2026 pilgrimage season coincides with the Saga Dawa Festival – the holiest month in the Tibetan Buddhist calendar, honouring the birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana of the Buddha. Traveling during this convergence of events is considered extraordinarily rare and blessed.
China issues a limited number of Tibet permits each year, and demand in 2026 is exceptionally high. Spaces are filling fast – secure your spot early.

Mount Kailash is also known as Kang Rimpoche in Tibetan and Kailash Parvat in Sanskrit. The altitude of this holy mountain is 6,638 meters (21,778 feet) above sea level. Buddhism, Jainism, Bon, and Hinduism consider this peak a holy destination, and each has its own religious beliefs.
Buddhists consider it the home of Demchog, a tantric deity representing enlightenment, while Hindus see it as the residence of Lord Shiva and his wife, Parvati. According to Jain tradition, Mount Kailash is the sacred place where Rishabhadeva, the first Tirthankara, attained liberation (moksha). The Tibetan Bon religion regards Kailash as the world’s spiritual centre. Many pilgrims also believe that the Lord Shiva face on Kailash can be seen in the natural formation of the mountain’s snow-covered southern face.

One of the main attractions of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is Lake Mansarovar and its beauty. This holy Lake is situated at the foot of Mount Kailash, and in Sanskrit it is called the “Lake of Consciousness and Victory”. Hindu and Tibetan Buddhism believe that taking a Dip in this holy Lake can purify the soul and wash away sins. Lake Mansarovar is also believed to have originated in the imagination of the creator of Hindu mythology, Brahma.

The most characteristic feature of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is the Parikrama, also called the Kailash Kora. Pilgrims pass through stunning scenery, such as the scenic Zuthulu-Puk cave monastery, the high Dolma-La Pass (5,630 meters), and the dramatic Dira-Puk monastery.

Gaurikund is a high-altitude lake in Tibet located on the Kailash Parikrama (Kora) route. According to Hindu belief, the goddess Parvati bathed in this pond and created Lord Ganesha. Rocky cliffs and snowfields surround Gauri Kund, and to reach here, you need a strenuous descent from Dolma La Pass.

Dolma La Pass is the highest point of the Kailash Tour, located at an altitude of 5,630 meters. During the Kora, you will cross this sacred mountain pass. The pass is named after Dolma (Tibetan for Goddess Tara). While crossing this sacred site, according to Tibetan belief, leaving clothes, hair, or prayer flags will help release bad karma.

During this Kailash tour, you will explore the rich culture and tradition of both Nepal and Tibet. In Kathmandu, you will visit temples and sacred sites listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In Tibet, you will witness the unique culture, traditions, lifestyle, and customs of the Tibetan people.

Note: Before booking the Kailash Mansarovar Tour with us check read the package in details including company terms and conditions.

Traveler's Note: In Nepal, visitors can obtain a tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport by paying the applicable fee and presenting the required documents. Indian citizens are exempt from the visa fee need to present a valid Indian passport or Voter Identity Card (Electoral Card) as their identity document.

Obtaining a Chinese group visa and Tibet Travel Permit typically takes 2–3 working days. On this day, you will submit your original passport and two passport-sized photographs to our office so we can begin the application process on your behalf.

Traveler’s note: On this day, you can also choose the places you want to visit, such as Chandragiri Hill, Nagarkot, etc., all of which can be finished in a single day. We will return you to your hotel after your day trip is over.
Traveler's Note: If you need any trekking gear — poles, thermals, warm layers — Thamel's gear shops offer good-quality rentals from around $1–3 per day, and many items can be bought at competitive prices. Our team is available today for any questions or pre-departure briefing needs.

Traveler's Note: Today's drive is the longest leg of the Nepal section, so come prepared. Bring snacks, a refillable water bottle, and something to keep you entertained — the scenery along the Langtang corridor is spectacular and more than worth watching. The vehicle will stop for a rest break and a sit-down lunch midway. Once you complete immigration formalities at the border, you will be introduced to your Tibetan driver and guide, who will accompany you for the rest of the journey through Tibet.
Traveler’s note: Since Kyirong village in Tibet is located at an altitude of roughly 3,000 meters (around 9,843 feet), all travelers must follow an acclimatization plan. Carry your water bottle and drink enough water to stay hydrated. Monitor your health conditions and take proper rest.

Traveler's Note: The drive from Kyirong to Saga covers approximately 230 km and takes around 6–7 hours on Tibet's well-paved highway. You will pass through the sweeping plains of the Tibetan Plateau and across the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra River). If time and road conditions allow, we may push on to Zhongba (approx. 300 km from Kyirong) to give you more time to explore Lake Mansarovar the following day — your guide will advise on the day.

Traveler's Note: Today's drive is long, so we set off early in the morning to ensure you arrive with enough time to perform your arrival rituals at the lake. Please note that as per current Chinese regulations, direct bathing in the lake is no longer permitted. Pilgrims should bring a bucket — you may draw water from the lake and bathe in the designated areas provided nearby. There is no charge for the water or the bathing area. We recommend bringing a change of clothes, a small bucket, and a towel. If you wish to visit the lake after dark to experience its legendary moonlit beauty, please carry some cash, as a small entry fee may apply in the evening hours.

Traveler's Note: Starting tomorrow, you begin the Kailash Kora — the spiritual centrepiece of this entire journey. Use today to rest fully, eat well, and monitor how your body is responding to the altitude. In Darchen, you have the opportunity to hire a horse or personal porter for the three-day Kora — this must be arranged before you leave town, as it is not possible to hire either once the trek has begun. Darchen also has small shops where you can stock up on snacks, supplies, and personal necessities. Pilgrims who prefer not to do the Kora trek may remain in Darchen and rejoin the group upon their return.
Traveller's Note: Dirapuk Monastery sits at over 5,000 metres above sea level, so please pace yourself throughout the day — slow and steady is the right approach at altitude. Drink water consistently, walk in your group, and never hesitate to alert your Tibetan guide if you feel any discomfort. Nights at Dirapuk are cold, so dress in your warmest layers and eat a hot dinner. Accommodation here is dormitory-style guesthouses shared with fellow pilgrims — simple, but part of the authentic Kora experience.
Optional excursion from Darchen: Pilgrims who wish to visit Ashtapad can request this through their Tibetan guide, subject to availability and conditions. This is not included in the standard package; payment is made directly to the guide.

Traveler's Note: The second day of the Kora is the most physically demanding section of the entire Yatra. You will ascend to Dolma La Pass at 5,640 metres — the highest point of the journey — before descending steeply to the glacial Gauri Kund lake. Start early, move slowly, and take regular short rests. Stay mindful of your own condition and those around you. Altitude sickness can affect anyone at this elevation regardless of fitness level, so do not hesitate to report any symptoms to your guide immediately. Carrying a packed lunch, extra water, and warm layers for the pass is essential.
Traveler's Note: Today's trek back to Darchen is gentler than yesterday, but maintain your usual care and pace — tired legs on the final day are still capable of causing slips on uneven terrain. Once all group members have completed the Kora and arrived back at Darchen, you will also complete the circumambulation of Lake Mansarovar by vehicle, fulfilling both the Kailash Kora and the Mansarovar Parikrama. It is a deeply meaningful moment to mark the end of the pilgrimage.
Traveler’s note: Kyirong is a traditional business hub for Nepalese people. You can expect a huge number of people here to trade Chinese products. Here you can find lots of shops selling at a cheap price. You can do last-minute shopping before leaving Tibet.
Traveler's Note: Stay with your group during all Nepal border immigration formalities — solo departures through the checkpoint are not permitted. Once across, your pre-arranged vehicle will be waiting to drive you back to Kathmandu. It is a long but scenic drive through the Langtang Valley. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your hotel in Thamel. The evening is yours — rest, celebrate, and reflect on an extraordinary journey. Tonight, enjoy your Farewell Dinner hosted by High Route Adventure, accompanied by traditional Nepali music and cultural performances.
Hotel Breakfast + Departure

When planning to book the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra package, it's essential to consider the best time for your trip. Pilgrims can choose their departure date between May and October, which is generally regarded as the optimal period for the Kailash Tour. These months are ideal because pilgrims can enjoy stunning views of Mount Kailash and its breathtaking landscape. Traveling and trekking are easier due to the moderate temperatures during this time. However, if you are traveling to Tibet for the Kailash tour between July and mid-August, you should exercise extra caution due to the monsoon season.
Read our guide to the best time for the Kailash Tour.

The food on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is primarily designed to provide sustenance rather than a culinary adventure. So you cannot expect a wide variety of menus and fine dining during this Yatra. In Tibet, you will find only Tibetan restaurants, so we will have our chef who will cook meals for you. Three meals will be provided to you during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
All the food that will be provided to you will be vegetarian items. Breakfast and Dinner will be provided in the Hotel/Guest house, whereas lunch will be packed and prepared early in the morning.
If you have any special dietary needs, please inform us while booking the trip with us. We will make special arrangements or provide suggestions. Here is the list of common food items that you can expect during Yatra:
Note: Don't forget to try some Tibetan dishes like Momo(dumplings) and Tibetan Noodles in Tibetan restaurants. But remember, you need to pay on your own.

When traveling to Tibet for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, you will stay in a dormitory-style room. The accommodations will be basic, lacking features such as heated floors or air conditioning. Travelers will need to share a bathroom with fellow trekkers, and most guesthouses will provide squat toilets. In remote areas, modern facilities are often quite limited. While guesthouses may offer Wi-Fi, hot showers, and electricity, these amenities might not be available everywhere, so be prepared for some rough days. Must Read: Food & Accomondation On Kailash Tour
The Kailash Parikrama (Kora) is regarded as moderately to highly challenging. While technical climbing skills are not required, the combination of high altitude, long walking days, and rugged mountain trails makes the trek physically demanding.
The Parikrama spans approximately 52 km (32 miles) over three days, with the highest point reaching Dolma La Pass at 5,630 m (18,471 ft). At this elevation, oxygen levels are significantly lower than at sea level, making even short climbs more strenuous.
Factors That Affect the Difficulty:
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is considered a challenging spiritual tour in the trek. Therefore, all the visitors who are planning their visit must plan and prepare in advance.
Here are some expert tips and advice that will help to make your journey to the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra effective and safe:

On this Kailash tour, it takes visitors over 18,600 feet (5,670 meters) at the Dolma La Pass. While heading to such high altitude, the risk of altitude sickness remains high. Therefore, it is important to have a proper acclimatization plan to stay safe and to avoid altitude sickness. We have crafted our tour package in such a way that there will be proper acclimatization in our itinerary. However, visitors must still be very careful about the altitude sickness symptoms. Understanding these symptoms, implementing preventive measures, and knowing what to do after experiencing altitude sickness are important for a safe and enjoyable trip.
If you experience any symptoms of altitude sickness during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, stop ascending, take rest, drink plenty of water, and descend (if symptoms worsen). You need to inform the trekking guide immediately if you find any trouble while traveling or trekking. Our trekking guides are experts in dealing with altitude sickness. Our team will be equipped with emergency oxygen and necessary medications.
The high altitude and remote location of the Yatra can impact communication during the Yatra. While some hotels and guest houses will have wifi, some won't. We suggest you carry a local Chinese SIM for mobile internet and communication. You can easily buy the local SIM in the town area. Remember, the Chinese government controls the apps, so all the apps that you are using might not work in Tibet. For this, you can use a VPN. The cost of the SIM card with a data package will cost you around 180-290 RMB.
All travelers who are traveling in Tibet for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, we highly recommend that you have travel insurance that covers high altitude risk, emergency evacuation, and medical expenses. This is because trekking at high altitudes is associated with risk, and you will travel in remote areas during the Yatra. There are no advanced medical facilities in these remote areas, so having travel insurance is beneficial. While purchasing the travel Insuranve your policy must include:

Your journey of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra starts from Kathmandu. Since your trip will be via overland, you will use ground transportation for this journey. We will arrange all the ground transportation within Nepal and Tibet. The road condition is perfect for road trips in Nepal and Tibet. The vehicle type that you will use depends on the number of groups.
If you are too weak to walk for the Kailash Kora, you can hire a horse or a personal porter to carry your things. You can utilize this service, but you need to let us know ahead of time. You also have to pay specific fees to use this service.
Please note: Even with a horse, certain sections of the route still require walking. Porters carry a maximum of 5 kg per person. Horse and porter hire must be arranged in Darchen before the Kora begins — it is not possible to arrange either once the trek is underway. Please inform our team in advance if you wish to use this service.

When traveling to the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) of China, visitors must be aware that the official currency in use is the Chinese Yuan (CNY), also referred to as Renminbi (RMB). Credit cards are accepted only in larger cities and tourist hubs such as Lhasa and Shigatse. Still, cash remains the preferred and often only accepted mode of payment in rural areas, mountainous regions, and smaller guesthouses. We recommend carrying sufficient small-denomination cash (RMB) for daily expenses, including entrance fees, local transport, meals, and small purchases. Foreign currencies such as USD, EUR, or INR are not accepted and must be exchanged at banks or authorized exchange counters in China before entering remote areas. ATMs are available in Lhasa and other major towns, but their reliability diminishes at higher altitudes and in remote areas. Therefore, it’s wise to withdraw cash upon arrival in major Tibetan cities.
Location: Situated in the southwestern corner of China, the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) sits atop the world’s highest plateau—the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau—often referred to as “The Roof of the World.” Tibet borders India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar. From Tibet, you can enjoy the spectacular landscape, including snow-capped peaks, high-altitude lakes, deep valleys, and vast grasslands. It is the starting point for the legendary Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a spiritual pilgrimage that draws thousands annually.
People: Tibet is home to the Tibetan people. They have a rich culture and strong spiritual beliefs. Tibetan Buddhism is an important part of daily life, and you can see prayer flags, mani stones, and monasteries everywhere. Tibetan people are known for their kindness, strength, and respect for nature and religion. Visitors are usually welcomed warmly, as long as they show respect for local customs and beliefs.
Language: The primary language spoken in TAR is Tibetan, a Sino-Tibetan language with its own unique script. Mandarin Chinese is widely used in official settings, tourist areas, and by tour guides. English is spoken only by a limited number of people, largely within the tourism industry. We recommend learning a few basic Tibetan or Mandarin phrases, such as Tashi Delek (Hello/Blessings), Tong su tra (Thank you), and Kawa che (Excuse me), which will go a long way in fostering goodwill.
For the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, the main thing you should focus on is packing for the Kailash Kora trekking. This trip doesn't require a lot of complicated gear and equipment. Here is a simple list of essential items you should bring with you on your Kailash Yatra:
Note: Travellers can rent items such as down jackets, sleeping bags, trekking poles, etc., from the rental shops in Kathmandu for around $1-$3 per day. Additionally, you can easily buy here in Kathmandu at low prices.
