I’ve hiked the Andes and the Alps, but Gokyo hit different. Standing at Gokyo Ri at 5,357m, looking down at the turquoise lakes with Cho Oyu and Everest in the same frame, was worth every step of the climb. The Ngozumpa Glacier is something photos will never do justice to — it’s this vast, cracked river of ice and rock stretching for kilometers. What surprised me most was how quiet the trail was compared to what I’d heard about Everest Base Camp. Some mornings it felt like we had the whole valley to ourselves. My legs were done by day 8, but my mind was completely somewhere else.
