The Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour is considered moderate in difficulty. On average, you will ride for about 5–6 hours each day, covering a mix of terrain. Approximately half of the route is blacktopped (paved roads), while the other half consists of off-road trails, including dirt, gravel, and uneven paths.
For riders who do not have prior off-road experience, certain sections may feel a bit challenging at first. However, the motorbikes used for the tour are specifically designed to handle rough terrain, making the journey more manageable and comfortable.
The main challenge that you need to focus on is altitude sickness(AMS)as you will reach the 3,840 m of Lo Manthan. While riding at such an altitude, the riders can catch altitude sickness symptoms like headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath.
If you experience this, you might need to return if symptoms don’t improve by taking rest and heading to a lower altitude. Also, sometimes due to a sudden change in weather, the Upper Mustang experiences heavy snowfall. Snowfall makes the riding trail risky due to its being icy and slippery.
With a steady pace, basic riding skills, and a willingness to adapt, most riders can complete and enjoy this adventurous journey.
Before starting your Motorbike journey in the Mustang region, it is mandatory to obtain the permit. You will need a Restricted Area Permit(RAP) as Upper Mustang is listed as restricted, as it lies close to the Tibetan border. Another permit you will need is the Annapurna Conservation Area Project permit (ACAP). You cannot get the RAP permit on your own so that High Route Adventure will arrange the permit, and also its cost will be covered by us as it is included in our tour package.
