Namche Bazaar, located in the Khumbu region of northeastern Nepal, is the central hub of the Sherpa people.  Namche Bazaar is located at an altitude of 3,440 m (11,286 ft) above sea level and is under the control of Sagarmatha National Park. It is a famous tourist hub and gateway to the iconic Everest Base Camp and other notable peaks, including Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Cho Oyu, and Nuptse. How to reach Namche Bazaar:

  • Kathmandu to Lukla: You can take a domestic flight from Kathmandu’s domestic terminal building to Lukla. The flight will take about 30 minutes.
  • Ramechhap to Lukla: During the peak season (spring and autumn), the Lukla flight operates only from Ramechhap airport. To reach Ramechhap, you can take a 4-5-hour drive from Kathmandu by road.
  • Alternative: You can also take a road trip from Kathmandu to Jiri and trek for several days to reach Namche Bazaar.

Required Permits To visit Namche Bazaar:

Since Namche Bazaar is located within Sagarmatha National Park, a permit is required before heading there. You can obtain the permit on your own through the Nepal Tourism Board or at Lukla or Monjo.

Here are the types of permits that you will need:

  1. Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit: Cost NPR 3,000 for foreign citizens and NPR 100 for locals.
  2. Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit: Cost NPR 3,000 for foreign citizens and NPR 100 for locals.
