Are you planning to visit mainland China or Tibet( an autonomous part of China) ? In recent years, China has expanded its visa-free entry policy to dozens of countries, making travel to both mainland China and Tibet easier than ever. Citizens from eligible countries can visit both mainland China and Tibet without applying for a visa in advance. They can take a direct flight or train to China without a visa; however, you must present a valid passport whenever asked. Also carry the supporting documents such as hotel reservations, a return ticket, and a travel itinerary.

Can Visa-Free Travelers Visit Tibet?

Visa-free travelers entering China do not need a separate visa for Tibet, but they must obtain a Tibet Travel Permit. Independent travel to Tibet is not allowed, and to enter Tibet, one must obtain the Tibet Travel Permit from the Tibet Tourism Bureau (TTB). This TTB can be obtained only with the join an organized tour or travel arrangement approved by the local authorities.

If you are planning to visit Lhasa, Tibet Everest Base Camp, or Kailash Mansarovar, then you need to first find the agency that processes the Tibet Permit for you and make travel arrangements.

How to Obtain a China Visa: Step By Step Guide

Step 1: Fill the detailed information online via portal of China Online Visa Application (COVA) by creating an account.

Step 2: Your application will be checked and it takes a few days for this review process.

Step 3: Once the application is approved you need to visit physically to the Embassy for the biometrics and passport drop.

China closes its government office on the main events like Spring Festival (Chinese New Year), National Day (Golden Week), Labor Day (Golden Week). So if you are planning to visit during this time make sure to apply at least 1 month in advance. 

Health & Altitude:

If you are travelling to Tibet( autonomous part of China) make sure to learn about the acute mountain sickness(AMS).Tibet is located at a high altitude, with many areas above 3,500 meters (11,500 feet), so when we reach high altitude the risk of altitude sickness becomes high. Follow the proper acclimatisation, keep hydrated and monitor health when travelling to Tibet.

  • It takes 3-4 days to obtain the chinese group visa from Nepal. By paying the extra fee of express processing, a Chinese group visa can be obtained in 2-3 days.
