Challenges That You Need to Face During Luxury Everest Base Camp Trek And Preparation Tips

Premium service during the luxury Everest Base Camp helps you to ease the trekking journey, but still, there are some challenges that you need to face while you are on a trek.  Trekking in the high-altitude Himalayas of Nepal is not an easy task. Even though there are challenges it is manageable when you prepare early and with the guidance of High Route Adventure.

Let’s see the factors that add challenge and preparation tips:

Altitude Challenges:

On this luxury Everest base camp trek, your trekking journey starts from the Lukla airport, whose altitude is 2.846 m, and reaches the Kala Patthar, which stands at 5,545 meters (18,192 ft). Trekking at such a high altitude to reach Kala Patthar sometimes might be difficult due to low oxygen levels in the air. This altitude effect can cause the symptoms of altitude sickness(AMS) like Headaches, Nausea, Difficulty sleeping and Shortness of breath.

These early symptoms of AMS can be cured in the early stage. But when it turns into an advanced form of High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) and High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), it can be dangerous. So we take necessary precautions at an early stage to avoid dangerous situations.

Pro Tip:

  • Take enough rest during the acclimatization day
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the trek.
  • Walk slowly at a high altitude, taking short steps.
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking
  • Take Medication like acetazolamide (Diamox) before and during the trek to reduce the altitude effect.
  • Climb high and sleep low if possible.

Physical Challenge:

Another challenge that trekkers need to face during the luxurious Everest base camp trek is the demand for physical fitness. Trekkers need to walk for 5-6 hours daily at high altitude in difficult terrain. Those who are not used to walking on steep hills and down hills and on narrow paths will find it extremely challenging.

Pro Tip:

  • Engage in physical fitness activities like joining a gym, doing yoga and strength-building activities like cycling, swimming, running, hiking etc.
  • Train your body for 2-3 months in advance if you're trekking for the first time or if you are a beginner trekker.

Weather Challenge:

Generally, the best time for the luxury Everest Base Camp trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. But sometimes everything does not go as planned, even during this best time, due to sudden changes in the weather conditions.

Unpredictable weather can turn the journey tough, as rain or heavy snowfall makes the trails slippery and the temperatures less comfortable for trekking.

Pro Tip:

  • Check the weather forecast before heading for EBC trekking. If the weather conditions become worse during the trek, stay in the tea house/lodge and avoid the trek until the weather becomes favorable for trekking.
  • Pack essential clothing and gear items so that you can deal with unexpected weather conditions.

At the higher altitude there might not be a single room and attached bathroom. So, at this place, you need to adjust yourself. Inside the cozy room, you will get amenities like a blanket, pillow, bed sheet and a small table.

Facilities you will get while you are staying in the tea house:

Drinking water: You will get a water bottle or hot water for drinking, and you can also refill your reusable water bottle.

WIFI: A Wi-Fi facility will be provided to you. At higher altitudes, the Wifi connection might not be good.

Charging: You will also get the charging facility while you stay in the tea house. You can charge all your electronic items there.

Hot shower: Trekkers can use the hot shower at lower altitudes, but at higher altitudes this service might be limited or not available.

While you are in Kathmandu, you will have a wide variety of food options on the menu when staying in a 5-star hotel.

While you are in a tea house/mountain lodge, we will arrange a three-meal meal for you. While you are at a lower altitude, there will be a variety of menus and choices for food, but the higher you go, the facility becomes limited. There are enough ATMs you can find while you are in Kathmandu, but once you reach the Everest Region, this service is very rare. You can find ATM service only in Lukla airport and in Namche Bazar. Due to the remote location, we suggest you carry cash by exchange while you are in Kathmandu. You can find lots of money exchange counters especially in Thamel areas.

For communication we suggest you buy the local Sim( NCELL or NTC) from the Kathmandu airport. To buy the SIM, it will cost you around USD1. For the Data and package, you need to spend around USD 5- 10. By using a local sim, you can use the mobile internet as well as communication with your loved ones.

Travel Insurance: What Your Insurance Policy Should Cover

Even though trekking with the High Route Adventure is completely safe, sometimes unexpected situations can occur. So, to remain safe, to protect yourself financially and to get the immediate medical and rescue operation, it is necessary to have travel and health insurance. Before purchasing travel insurance, make sure that it covers this things:
