The Chisapani Nagarkot Trek is a beautiful short trek that takes you to the outskirts of the capital city where you can view the distant mountains up close from vantage points embedded within wonderfully verdant landscapes. It is one of the most comfortable ways to enjoy the peaks without an arduous trek at high elevations. The trip takes you to the famous hill station near the city- Nagarkot, from where panoramic views of the mountain peaks are seen spectacularly. Moreover, the trip also includes a visit to many of the countryside settlements near the capital that present a peaceful ambiance and a wonderful cultural milieu. The trip is best for trekkers who want to experience the Himalayas in a very short amount of time and without traveling very far from the city.
As such, the Chisapani Nagarkot Trek begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal– a beautiful village located about 15 kilometers northeast of the capital. Named after the village’s abundant water bodies and its natural beauty, Sundarijal is a gorgeous retreat away from the bustling crowds of the city. Derived from the term “Sundari” which means beautiful in Nepali, and “Jal” meaning water, the village is also the abode of the Sundarimai Temple- the village’s patron goddess. Also, north of Chisapani lies the Shivapuri Nagerjun National Park, one of the last woodland areas left in the valley. The forested hill of Nagerjun is home to 177 species of birds and numerous rare orchids, as well as various butterflies that flit about near the many streams and tributaries of the woodlands.
Likewise, the trip then takes you to Chisapani, another vantage point near Sundarijal from where panoramic views of the peaks decorate the skyline. Starting the trek at the foot of the Shivapuri Forest, Chisapani offers some of the prettiest hills and sprawling sights of the Kathmandu valley, as well as magnificent Himalayan tapestries. Finally, the trip then takes you to Nagarkot- one of the best hill stations near the city from where the panoramic views of the eastern Himalayan peaks, from Mount Everest to Annapurna, are displayed in one of the most thrilling ways!
Similarly, the trip then also includes a visit to Changunarayan Temple – a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is situated atop the Dolagiri Hill a few miles from Bhaktapur city. It is also one of the oldest temples in Nepal and is constructed in a beautifully traditional architectural style, embossed with historical pillars, statues of the mythical Garuda, woodwork depicting legends from epic books, and Vedic texts as well as dexterous stone masonry.
The Chisapani Nagarkot Trek has incorporated the best features of Kathmandu’s countryside. It presents a chance to experience the ethnic Tamang culture of the region, as well as enjoy the natural landscape that is ornamented with Himalayan serration and emerald hillocks of junipers, bamboo groves, and cedar woods.
