The Putha Hiunchuli Expedition is an adventure trip to a magnificent mountain named Putha Hiunchuli, which is located in the far-western part of Nepal and is 7,246 meters (23,773 feet) in altitude. Putha Hiunchuli has a Nepali name, which means “snowy summit Putha”. It is also called Putha by local folks of Dolpo and Rukum, meaning mountain in their language. They think that the peak is closely tied with the indigenous culture and traditions, and hence a difficult climb, but a culturally significant one.

Though Putha Hiunchuli is sometimes called Dhaulagiri VI, it is a name that gives the impression of another sub-peak of the Dhaulagiri range. Putha Hiunchuli is, in fact, a separate and isolated mountain in the far-western section of the Dhauligiri region. It possesses its base camp, special route approaches, and distinctive mode of climbing, which makes it a distinct peak with a different identity from the main peak of Dhaulagiri.

Putha Hiunchuli has become quite popular among the mountaineers as one of the most convenient 7,000-meter peaks in Nepal. It is a mountain that is in high demand by many climbers who use it as a training area before they can go out to conquer difficult 8,000-meter climbs.

Compared to other Himalayan mountains like Mt. Everest, which is crowded, Putha Hiunchuli has been mostly left untouched, and thus, it has been termed a virgin peak with untouched and clean beauty. This renders it a mountain explorer’s dream to experience adventure and to have a sense of isolation in the far Himalayas.

Why Choose the Putha Hiunchuli Expedition?

The Thrill of the Uncharted

Putha Hiunchuli is not a busy mountain, and each expedition seems to be exclusive and rare. Having a smaller number of climbers on this peak allows you to have a personal and original experience that is not crowded with the commercial routes. To climb to its summit is that peculiar and thrilling spirit of pioneering, the glory of being one of those few who have stood on this untouched Himalayan giant. Along the way, you’ll be surrounded by pristine landscapes, rich with unique flora and fauna that remain largely undisturbed by mass tourism.

Technical Challenge and Reward

Climbing Putha Hiunchuli includes walking along glaciers, snowy ridges, and ice, which is a good mix of difficulty and satisfaction. It is not the most technical of the 7,000-meter peaks, but it requires prior experience in high altitude, good shape and stamina of the mind. This renders it the best choice among climbers who are planning to travel to 8,000 meters. The achievement of the peak cannot be compared to any other feeling; the fact that you have climbed one of the least visited peaks in Nepal, but the most rewarding peaks, is incomparable to any other feeling.

Cultural Immersion in Remote Regions

The approach to the base camp of Putha Hiunchuli is no less a part of the memory than the climbing itself. Hiking west Nepal, you will walk along isolated paths, cross through the traditional villages, and get acquainted with various ethnic groups that have not abandoned their ancient traditions and lifestyles. This experience is not commercialised like the usual trekking paths, but rather a pure, raw adventure, such that cultural experience is not only authentic but extremely immersive.

Stunning and Diverse Scenery

Even on the first day, the landscape continues to vary – beginning with a rich green foothill before progressing to alpine meadows, and then to the dry and high altitude areas of the Dhaulagiri region. The views of the Dhaulagiri range and the concealed valleys and expansive wilderness make the panorama magnificent, seen even on the top of Putha Hiunchuli into Tibet. To the photographers and nature-loving people, each and every step in this journey will present a photo-worthy sight.

Spring (March – May)

  • Conditions: Moderate temperatures, clear skies, and blooming wildflowers in the high altitude areas.

  • Pros: Very stable weather, providing breathtaking views of the Dhaulagiri range and surrounding peaks.
  • Cons: Shorter daylight hours and a busy peak climbing season, resulting in more climbers on the mountain.

General Advice

Home of the majestic Mt. Everest (8848m), the Everest region boasts a wide range of trails leading deeper into the Himalayas amongst which Island Peak climbing is one of the most frequented and also one of the most loved. Surrounded by a sea of ice, the mountain peak hosts a surreal view of the entire Everest Himalayas whilst filling you in with the adventure of standing on a Mountain Top.

Combining this with the classic Everest Base Camp Trek gives you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the Everest Region in all its glory. Island Peak is located at Imja Tse Valley. This is the most popular climbing peak in Nepal. It prefers those climbers with less experience or those to climb for the first time to go over six thousand m altitudes.

Trip Outline

Island Peak climbing is the Himalayan journey that commences with an exhilarating mountain flight to the renowned airstrip of Lukla. Following the banks of the Dudh Koshi River to reach Phakding, the trek begins from Lukla through lush green forests covered with rhododendrons, fir, and magnolia trees. Past the hamlets of Thulo Ghamela, Bengkar, and Monjo, the trail reaches Jorsalle and enters Sagarmatha National Park in the process.

You then reach the picturesque town of the Sherpas, Namche, where you take a day off for acclimatization before setting off to Tengboche. Visiting the sacred Dawa Choling Monastery in Tengboche, you continue the trek through the settlements of Pheriche, Lobuche, and Gorakshep to then traverse along the lateral moraines of Khumbu and Lhotse glaciers to reach Everest Base Camp (5364m) where you get to marvel at the unforgettable beauty of the Himalayas.

Attractions of Trek

An early journey to Kalapatthar offers you a gorgeous Himalayan sunrise and then takes you back to Lobuche, from where you leave the classic EBC trekking route and cross the arduous Kongma La Pass (5535m) to reach Chhukung. Taking a day off to acclimatize and also practice some climbing techniques, you summit the majestic Island Peak (6,189m) through ice and snow, experiencing every bit of the unique Himalayan experience. As you retrace your trail to Pangboche, Namche, Lukla, and Kathmandu, the feeling of accomplishment starts to sink in leaving you to want for more.

  • Island Peak is in a remote region, so you should not expect advanced medical facilities. Have proper travel insurance in case of emergencies or altitude sickness.
  • Before attempting the summit, no previous mountaineering experience is required but you should be very confident in your physical fitness, stamina, and technical skills.

  • Training and getting in your best physical fitness before the trip is a great goal to work towards. Seeing your endurance improve is motivating.
  • Summiting Island Peak is considered a major mountaineering achievement but is still accessible to adventurers with proper training and guidance. It’s a great introduction to serious climbing.
  • Returning home with incredible memories, photos and stories of climbing a Himalayan peak is priceless. You gain confidence in yourself and your abilities. It’s an amazing personal accomplishment.
  • Magnificent vistas of the Khumbu Icefall and other glaciers like the Khumbu and Lhotse glaciers can be seen from vantage points along the trail. The icefalls are spectacular to witness in person.

The Ama Dablam Expedition with High Route Adventure is a remarkable mountaineering journey that encapsulates the essence of adventures in the heart of the Himalayas! Ama Dablam, often referred to as the “Matterhorn of the Himalayas” due to its distinctive pyramid shape, offers climbers a challenging yet rewarding ascent. The route to its summit is a test of technical skill, physical endurance, and unwavering determination! Are you ready?

The climb begins at Base Camp, nestled in the shadow of Ama Dablam, at an elevation of approximately 4,600 meters (15,092 feet). From here, climbers embark on an arduous journey that takes them through a series of high-altitude camps. The Advanced Base Camp (ABC), situated at around 5,639 meters (18,500 feet), serves as the launching point for the expedition’s higher reaches.

As climbers ascend, they traverse rocky terrains, negotiate steep ridges, and face the challenges of snow and ice. Camp I, also known as “The Yak Camp,” at about 5,700 meters (18,700 feet), offers the first significant rest stop! From there, they advance to Camp II, or “The Advanced Camp,” perched at approximately 6,000 meters (19,685 feet) on a narrow snow ridge. It’s here that climbers intensify their acclimatization efforts and prepare for the more demanding sections ahead.

High Route Adventure’s expert climbing guides continue with you to Camp III, known as “The Summit Camp,” at around 6,480 meters (21,260 feet). This camp is strategically placed just below Ama Dablam’s southwest ridge, making it the final camp before the summit push!

The ascent to the summit, standing tall at 6,812 meters (22,349 feet), is the Major highlight of the Ama Dablam expedition. Climbers must navigate technical rock and ice sections, employing their skills and determination to reach the pinnacle of Ama Dablam’s majestic Himalayan pyramid!

A few things you should know before climbing Mt Ama Dablam

To conquer Ama Dablam, one must be equipped with a comprehensive arsenal of gear and equipment tailored to the requirements of high-altitude mountaineering in Nepal! In contrast to standard hiking gear, this expedition demands specialized tools and gear.

Crampons with precision-engineered spikes provide essential traction on icy surfaces, while harnesses with safety features offer peace of mind on tricky rock faces. Ice axes, designed for balance and power, are indispensable for navigating steep slopes and ice formations. Furthermore, altitude-resistant clothing, constructed with cutting-edge materials, ensures climbers remain warm and safe in the ever-changing Himalayan weather.

These tools are not mere accessories; they are lifelines, enabling climbers to conquer the unforgiving terrain of Ama Dablam. Climbers who embark on this expedition are advised to have some prior experience. Proficiency in rock and ice climbing is a benefit, as is the ability to utilize ropes and anchors!

Mt Ama Dablam is renowned for its formidable challenges. Its distinctive pyramid shape presents a complex medley of rock, snow, and ice obstacles. The exposed ridges and sheer rock faces demand a level of technical skill. With the help of High Route Adventure, you’ll navigate steep sections with finesse, employing a blend of rock and ice climbing techniques.

The thin air at high altitudes adds another layer of complexity, requiring climbers to acclimatize gradually and make calculated decisions to ensure their safety and success.

When to summit Mt Ama Dablam in Nepal?

The timing of the expedition is an important consideration! The optimal seasons for the Mt Ama Dablam expedition are autumn/fall (October-November) and spring (April-May). During these months, the weather tends to be more stable, with clear skies and manageable temperatures.

Embarking on the climb during other times of the year exposes climbers to harsh and unpredictable weather conditions, significantly increasing the risk associated with the ascent. Timing, therefore, is a factor that can make the difference between a successful summit and a perilous retreat!

Ama Dablam Camp-by-Camp to the Summit

Base Camp:

The journey begins at the base camp, situated at approximately 4,600 meters (15,092 feet) above sea level. This is the starting point for climbers and serves as the hub for organizing equipment, acclimatization, and initial briefings. High Route Adventure sets up our main camp here. Advanced Base Camp (ABC):

After training at base camp, climbers ascend to the advanced base camp, located at around 5,400 meters (17,716 feet). This camp is strategically positioned closer to the mountain and serves as a launch pad for further ascents. Climbers typically spend several days here, acclimatizing to the increasing altitude and preparing for the more challenging sections ahead.

Camp I:

Often referred to as “The Yak Camp,” is situated at approximately 5,700 meters (18,700 feet) above sea level. It is the first high camp along the route, marking a significant step in the ascent. Climbers establish this camp on a rocky terrace and use it as a resting point during their climb. From here, the route becomes steeper and more technical.

Camp II:

Called “The Advanced Camp,” Camp II is positioned at approximately 6,000 meters (19,685 feet). It is a critical waypoint in the climb and is nestled on a narrow snow ridge. Climbers may spend several nights here, adjusting to the altitude and preparing for the challenging sections ahead. Camp II offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.

Camp 2.7:

Also known as “The Summit Camp,” it is situated at around 6,480 meters (21,260 feet) above sea level. This camp is strategically located just below the mountain’s southwest ridge. It is the final camp before the summit push and requires a technical climb to reach. Climbers typically set off from here in the early hours of the morning for their summit attempt.

Ama Dablam Summit:

Mt Ama Dablam Summit

The ultimate goal of the expedition is to reach the summit of Ama Dablam, which stands at an impressive 6,812 meters (22,349 feet) above sea level. Success at the summit is a testament to the climber’s skill, determination, and preparation!

Is Ama Dablam Expedition Suitable For You?

  • The climb requires ascending steep exposed ridges and climbing rock. Excellent technical skills in ropes, rappelling, anchors, etc., are essential.
  • The summit bid involves difficult sections like the Yellow Tower. This requires strong mental stamina, in addition to physical capability.
  • Weather conditions on summit day can be extremely harsh – low temperatures with strong winds. Make sure you have top-grade cold weather gear to withstand that.
  • Camping for weeks around 5,000 – 6,000m means very basic tent conditions and below-freezing temps. Prepare mentally and with gear for sleeping in such environments.
  • Due to tricky logistics, unstable weather issues, etc., summit attempts tend to be tough. Be mentally ready to turn around if needed.
  • Limited summit days per season means securing a permit many months in advance. It gets booked out quickly by experienced climbers only.
  • Ama Dablam’s difficulty requires technical skills. It’s suited for intermediate-advanced climbers pursuing a major Himalayan challenge with proper prior extreme altitude experience.

When to Hike to Paradise: Finding the Best Time for Your Mardi Himal Trek

Mardi Himal trek is possible throughout the year, but the best seasons to experience this wonderful trail are the spring and autumn seasons. The two seasons have been chosen as the most suitable due to the following reasons.

      Spring Season (March-May)

      • It is warm during the daytime and cool in the evening, perfect to hike in.
      • It is flanked with rhododendrons in bloom as well as multicolored wildflowers.
      • During the early part of the spring season, the high areas may still have snow patches, which will add to the scenery.
      • There is little or no rainfall, hence dry, safe roads.
      • One can also see Himalayan birds as well as animals which in these months migrate more often.

      Autumn Season (September – November)

The ideal season to hike to Mardi Himal is autumn because it has clear weather with stable conditions.

      • You will enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery, especially those of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South.
      • This is also the time of festive celebration in Nepal. The villages along the way have celebrations such as Dashain and Tihar.
      • The route is dry and safe, with crossing the higher altitudes less difficult as less snow is encountered.
      • You will encounter hospitable trekkers who share your own experience at the tea houses on the route.

Note: Off-seasons for the trek to Mardi Himal are December to February (winter) and from June to August (monsoon season). Winter is a season of freezing temperatures and snow, especially at higher altitudes, which can render hiking difficult. The monsoon season comes with heavy rainfall, muddy trails, and the danger of landslides, so trekking is not advisable.

Everest Base Camp Gokyo Trek via Cho-La Pass is a wonderful combination that allows trekkers to enjoy both scenic sides of the high Khumbu region in the close shadow of towering Mt. Everest. One of the most popular trekking adventures in Nepal is the Everest Base Camp trek. Few groups seldom venture to take the high route over Cho-La Pass to reach the beautiful and very scenic Gokyo Valley with its turquoise-colored glacial lakes.

Gokyo Everest Base Camp Trek via Cho-La Pass will be a great adventure holiday where you will be walking on a quiet mountain path to cross the high Cho-La Pass. After completing the trek to Everest Base Camp and the highest spot Kalapathar rocky hilltop, enjoy a breathtaking panorama of giant peaks with Mt. Everest at its closest distance.

High Route Adventure has designed the itinerary with flexible rest days for proper acclimatization. All travelers booked with us can enjoy the fabulous adventure to Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Valley Trek, crossing Cho-La Pass. Our program is slightly different from other companies, visiting Everest Base Camp and Kalapathar on the first part of the adventure. This makes it more accessible to climb over Cho-La Pass to reach scenic Gokyo Valley, a beautiful destination enclosed by high snow peaks.

The Everest Gokyo Cho-La Pass Trek — the original spelling is Tsho-La, meaning “a pass with an icy pond” — is generally called Cho-La for simplicity among foreign travelers. Likewise, Mt. Everest is called Sagarmatha in Nepal, while the Sherpa people know it as Chomolungma in the Tibetan language, as Everest straddles the border between Nepal and Tibet/China.

Journey to Everest Base Camp Gokyo Trek Via Cho-la Pass

To begin this wonderful adventure, take a swift panoramic short flight from Kathmandu to the Sherpa town of Lukla, with a unique airstrip enclosed by high green hills and snowy mountains. The airport in Lukla is named Tenzing-Hillary Airport, a tribute to the first conquerors of Mt. Everest.

From Lukla, the trek starts with easy gradual walks through several Sherpa farm villages, following the Dudh Kosi River to reach Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Entering the park leads into beautiful woodlands of rhododendrons and pine trees, with a scenic uphill climb to reach the famous Namche Bazaar.

At Namche Bazaar, trekkers enjoy a free day for acclimatization before heading to higher destinations. This vibrant Sherpa hub offers short hikes to viewpoints and a fascinating museum displaying information on the Khumbu and Everest region.

After a relaxing time in Namche — where a colorful Saturday market is held weekly, giving the place its name “Bazaar” — the journey continues along a scenic trail to picturesque Tengboche and its impressive monastery.

      Trek to Everest Base Camp

Everest Base Camp Gokyo Trek Via Cho-la Pass
The final pit stop before making the trip up the valley towards Everest Base Camp. Gorakshep is a fairly primitive but important stopping point for many hikers making the final leap towards EBC.

From Dingboche, the trail heads towards Everest Base Camp via Lobuche and Gorakshep, temporary settlements with basic lodges for trekkers. The path leads across moraine and glacier terrain to reach the famous Everest Base Camp, near the massive Khumbu Icefall and glaciers.

During the spring climbing season, this area is filled with colorful expedition tents. The views of surrounding peaks are incredible, with the summit of Mt. Everest visible above.

The final push to Kalapathar (5,643 m / 18,514 ft) offers the closest panoramic view of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Pumori. After completing the Everest Base Camp section, the trek heads towards Dzongla, the base for Cho-La Pass.

The early morning crossing of Cho-La Pass is one of the most challenging days of the trek. The pass is decorated with rock cairns and Buddhist prayer flags, offering breathtaking views of Cholatse, Lobuche, Nirekha, and even Cho-Oyu in the north.

From here, descend into Gokyo Valley, near the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in the Nepal Himalaya.

Cultural Highlight – Tengboche Monastery & Festivals

Tengboche is surrounded by high snow peaks with spectacular views of Mt. Everest and Ama Dablam, set within serene alpine forests. Visitors can explore the monastery, and in autumn, witness the famous Mani Rimdu Festival.

From Tengboche, the route leaves the tree line and enters the high mountain wilderness. The walk leads to Pangboche village, then to Dingboche in the scenic Imjatse Valley, where trekkers enjoy another acclimatization day to explore stunning viewpoints.

Exploring Gokyo Valley & Gokyo Ri

      Gokyo Lake, Khumjung, Nepal

At Gokyo, enjoy a rest day to explore the crystal-clear Gokyo Lakes and surrounding Himalayan scenery. A hike to the summit of Gokyo Ri rewards trekkers with a 360° view of four of the world’s highest mountains — Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho-Oyu — along with the turquoise Gokyo Lakes below.

      Return Journey

The adventure concludes with a descent to Lukla, followed by a scenic flight back to Kathmandu — ending a truly unforgettable Everest Base Camp Gokyo Trek via Cho-La Pass.

Best Time for Everest Base Camp Gokyo Trek via Cho-La Pass

The Everest Base Camp Gokyo Trek via Cho-La Pass is a high-altitude adventure that combines the beauty of two iconic destinations — Everest Base Camp and the turquoise Gokyo Lakes. To make the most of this challenging yet rewarding journey, choosing the right season is essential.

      Spring Season (March to May)

Spring is one of the best times for this trek. The weather is generally stable, skies are clear, and temperatures are pleasant for high-altitude hiking. This is also the blooming season for rhododendrons and other alpine flowers, adding vibrant colors to the trails. The visibility is excellent, offering crystal-clear views of Mt. Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and other Himalayan giants.

      Highlights of Spring Trek:

      • Warm and sunny days, cool nights.
      • Spectacular mountain views and colorful landscapes.
      • Perfect conditions for crossing Cho-La Pass without heavy snow.

      Autumn Season (September to November)

Autumn is another prime time for the Everest Gokyo Cho-La Pass trek. After the monsoon rains, the air becomes crisp and dust-free, providing incredible panoramic views. Days are sunny with mild temperatures, while nights are cool to cold at higher elevations. This season is also the most popular among trekkers, so you’ll meet adventurers from around the world.

      Highlights of Autumn Trek:

      • Clear skies with dramatic sunrise and sunset views.
      • Comfortable weather for long trekking days.
      • Best time for photography around Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes.

      Winter Season (December to February)

Winter offers stunning views but comes with harsh cold and heavy snowfall, especially around Cho-La Pass. Only experienced trekkers with proper gear should attempt this route in winter. Trails are quiet, giving a peaceful trekking experience for those who can handle the cold.

      Highlights of Winter Trek:

      • Fewer trekkers, peaceful trails.
      • Crystal-clear visibility with snow-covered landscapes.

      Monsoon Season (June to August)

Monsoon brings heavy rainfall, making trails slippery and increasing the risk of landslides in lower regions. Cloud cover often hides mountain views, and crossing Cho-La Pass becomes more dangerous. This is the least recommended season for the trek.
