Several ways to reach the starting point of the Manaslu trek, one can drive to Gorkha town located in Nepal Mid-West. From the main historical Gorkha town, the drive continues downhill past many farm villages to Khan-Chowk, and then to Arughat town.

 Arughat is located 550 m / 1,805 feet high on the shelf of Buri Gandaki River, a moderate size farm town. The other route from Kathmandu is via Malekhu town and across Trisuli River to Dhading-Besi and then reach Arughat. 

At Arughat one needs to shift on local vehicles, suitable for the rough dirt road, a few hours’ drive to Soti-Khola which is at the height of 700 m / 2, 296 feet. 

Journey on Local Bus:

However, the ride can be quite bumpy on winding dirt hilly tracks, but an exciting drive from Chamje village.

The overland journey takes you downhill past Jagat farm village and further down to Syange. Drive continues following the Masrsyangdi River downstream through Bulbule and Khudi village to Besisahar town. From here onward on a good road to Kathmandu or Pokhara as per your respective destinations.

Dharapani or Chamje to Besisahar on Private Jeep:

 A great ride taking a private jeep ride from Dharapani or Chamje village, an enjoyable drive on comfortable seating arrangement. The drive leads you on winding downhill above Masrsyangdi River past Jagat village, then further descend leads to Syange village. From here onward on the good dirt road to reach Besisahar, enjoying the ride along with exciting landscape scenery. Besisahar to Kathmandu on the Local Bus:

From Besisahar the headquarter town of Lamjung district to Kathmandu on a local bus departs in the morning till late afternoon time. A distance of 186 km or 115 miles takes more than 5 hours, as the local bus frequently stops. That is to pick and drop some passengers as well for a refreshment stop and might take time.

There are several buses from simple to deluxe coach also, the arrangements of the seats according to your ticket number wise. Best to get in front and behind from the driver seats, with enough legroom than in the middle row.

Besisahar to Kathmandu on Private Jeep or Car:

Staying overnight in Besisaharr after the end of the trek around Manaslu can have leisure breakfast. As the private vehicles will be at your disposal, where you can choose your own time at comfort. Besisahar to Pokhara on Local Bus:

After an overnight at Besisahar, depending upon your time for departure in the morning leave for the Bus station. Where you can board a local bus and find your seats as mentioned on the ticket. Normally local buses have 20 to 25 seats, as well as extra seating near the driver. A drive of 3-4 hours with frequent stops along the way to pick up and drop of passengers. 108 k.m driving distance from Besisahar to Pokhara, normally departs on time from morning 7 a.m. till late afternoon.

Road Condition:

Drive from Kathmandu or Pokhara to Soti-Khola to begin the trek, for the first part of the journey on a good tarmac road. From Arughat town, the drive leads on dirt country road, can be quite bumpy in some sections till you reach an overnight destination at Soti-Khola.

After ending the Manaslu Circuit trek either at Dharapani or Chamje villages, where one can choose local bus or private vehicles. The road condition till Besisahar is on dirt tracks, from Besisahar onward on the good main highway. From Chamje on winding downhill to Syange village and then on the gradual road to Besisahar town.

 Spending an overnight stop at Besisahar, the road is good on the main highway to reach your planned destination either Kathmandu or Pokhara.

Accommodation on Manaslu Circuit Trek

High route trek, provides you the best accommodation facility during your Manaslu Trek, you will spend the first 2 days in a star hotel of Kathmandu basically at the Thamel area (famous tourist hub). Comfortable beds with attached bathrooms and air cons is available in a hotel room where you will be staying at.  For your entertainment, other extra amenities such as free Wi-Fi, breakfast, lunch, dinner, café, pub, bar are provided. Moreover, you have to pay extra charges for expenditures incurred for your personal entertainment.

During your trekking trail route, you will be staying at the best available mountain teahouse and lodges. Manaslu region is least developed as we compared it with Everest and Annapurna regions. Therefore, you will find the basic service offer by teahouses and lodges on your stay. Such tea houses give the facilities of bed, western-style toilet (common washroom), sitting and dining area. The extra charge is levy if you use internet services or any electronic gadgets. You have to carry toilet paper rolls with you as most of the lodges and tea houses don’t have them in their washroom.

You will be staying a shared room (between two people), with thin wall plaster. The tea house bed comes with a quilt, pillows, blankets, and thick mattresses. Besides this, you can use your own sleeping bag and pillow for your comfort.

For your company during solo travel, you will be accompanied by a fellow traveler of the same gender. A single room is also available but you need to pay the added cost as it is beyond our facilities.

Note: you won’t be able to find the best-accommodated room as you hike on high elevations. The number of tea houses and lodges will be less in high altitude.

We advise you to bring your own gluten-free snacks and other extra foods if you are a gluten intolerant person as there will be limited food options at the teahouse. Moreover, you can expect varieties of food lists on the menu if your trail lies close to Kathmandu. Tea houses and lodges during your trial serve you freshly prepared meals. Such tea houses include various cuisine like rice, lentils, curry, bread momos Nepalese cultural dishes. Best Time to Travel

Note: Larkya la – a high mountain pass (5,165 m) lies in the Manaslu region, so it is very challenging and can be very difficult to pass through this during the season of Monsson and winter. The route may become slippery and can be quite risky to trek due to bad weather. So, it is strongly not recommended during those times.

Entry permits and requirement Trek To Manaslu Circuit

Each and every entry and permit are arranged by the agency with whom you book your trek. Your group should be consisting of two or more people to obtain a permit in a Manaslu Restricted Area. Several permits are needed for the Manaslu trek which are:

• Manaslu Conservation Area Project Entry Permit,
• Annapurna Conservation Area Project Entry Permit,
• Manaslu Restricted Area Permit, and
• TIMS (Tourist Information Management System) card.

Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu and Pokhara have authority to access those areas to provide entries card and permission. However, you need to obtain a permit from the Department of Immigration, especially for Manaslu Restricted Area.

Altitude Sickness – How to Avoid it?

Manaslu trek is done at the base of the 8th highest mountain in the world having an altitude of (8156m). You will reach one of the highest mountain passes- Larkya la (5165 m), in this level, there will be shortness of oxygen level which will lead to breathing difficulty.

During your trial on such altitude, you may often have Acute Mountain Sickness which have symptoms like dizziness, headache, nausea, fatigue, low blood pressure, fatigue, shortness of breathing, etc. to be a fit and get used to in such an environment you need to walk slowly and steadily. Moreover, you have to keep your body hydrated from time to time. If you force yourself to walk fast to reach your destination then it is obvious that you may suffer from altitude sickness.

Basically, altitude sickness is started to see if you are in an elevation above 2000 meters. A good sound sleep is needed for mild cases. You have to nourish yourself and drink a sufficient amount of warm water, soup, tea, etc. to keep your sickness aside and continuing your journey.

Prevention is better than cure, so you should be health conscious keeping in mind that your health is more important while doing trekking in a mountain region. If the situation of AMS arises then one may have to return down to a lower elevation and get medical help as soon as possible.  Air evacuation will be arranged and such patients will be flown to Kathmandu directly for medical treatment in a worst-case scenario. Carelessness may take one’s life.

The acclimatizing day is kept for taking rest as you will be walking in a mountain region and high elevations. Moreover, a rest day will help you to allow your body to adjust to the thin environment of the Manaslu region. The more you walk at a higher altitude the more oxygen level will gradually decrease which is the reason you have to health-conscious.

Internet Connectivity and Services

As your trek prevail is a mountain region- Manaslu, the internet connection is available in a specific place such as tea houses, lodges. However, you can use mobile data to get connected with your loved ones while trekking and show them how mesmerizing Nepal is in real.

You can use the internet by paying a certain amount for user id and password for internet connectivity in a tea house and get access over Wi-Fi. You can use this paid internet throughout your trial in a Manaslu region.

Note: you have to get a mobile sim card (NTC / Ncell) in Kathmandu and should use it to get access of mobile data and being in touch with family, friends and agency. 

Travel Insurance For The Trek to Manaslu

Challenging Larke-La Pass Crossing

Crossing over Larke-La Pass, a traverse from the district of Gorkha and the high Manaslu scenic valley to reach the eastern end of Manang district. Actually, the high Larke-La pass at 5,106 m and 16,752 feet high, is not as challenging as it looks except in bad weather or deep snow conditions and snowstorms.

However, all trekkers need to be well prepared with enough warm clothing, to withstand the cold wind, as walks take you near Larke Glacier reaching Duwang, or Dharmasala and Larke-Phedi / base, a place with a lodge serving travelers crossing Larke- La.

The adventure starts early morning on a gradual winding uphill to reach the highest point of the Manaslu circuit trek as the climb takes you to the north side of Larke Glacier with magnificent views of Cho Danda and then of Larke Peak. 

Finally, walk across the moraines of the glacier, with a gradual ascent which becomes steeper in the last section to reach on top of the pass.

From the pass, you can enjoy the outstanding views of Himlung, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, and Annapurna II. A long descent follows from the pass to Bhimtang, a lovely place with several lodges to stay.

Manaslu Circuit Trekking, Restricted Area

To enter the Gorkha district further high on the Manaslu Circuit or for Tsum Valley Trekking, all visitors need to obtain special restricted area permits as it is a restricted area. It is the rules declared by the Nepal Government related to the Tourism Board to conserve its pristine environment and limit the flow of trekkers in the region. In the region, the visitors can travel in groups of at least 2-3 people with a licensed guide from a reputed agency that you book for the trip, or with High Route Adventure.

This restricted region starts from the village of Jagat in the Gorkha district to Dharapani village, located in the district of Manang.

The more we move to the higher area of Manaslu and Tsum Valley, the more we get to see a raw and fresh country that is also close to the border of Tibet / China.

The cost of a special permit for Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley is US$ 100 per person, for the first week of 7 days, with an additional US$ 15 per person per day onwards till you reach Dharapani on Manaslu Circuit, or back to Jagat if you after visiting Tsum Valley.

The above cost is around the main peak season of autumn/fall around September to November. But for low seasons, and as well for springtime which is the best time from December to August, the price of permits comes down to US$ 75 per person with an additional US$ 10 per person / per day from 7 days onwards to the last checkpoints. 

Manaslu Conservation Area

Whether you join in for Manaslu Circuit or Tsum Valley, the region of Manaslu to Tsum Valley falls within Manaslu Conservation Area, which was established in 1998 with an area that covers about 1,663 sq. km where trekkers need MCA (Manaslu Conservation Area) permits, and as well after crossing Larke-La Pass to reach on the other side at Dharapani in Manang, where ACAP fee is applied (Annapurna Conservation Area Project).

But for Tsum Valley ACAP permit is not required unless you merge your adventure with the Manaslu Circuit trek.

The Manaslu Conservation Area helps to maintain walking trails and conserve its fertile and pristine environment from destruction, as most villagers higher up and lodge use kerosene oil or LPG gas to cook food for trekkers, where burning of wood is not allowed to save from deforestation.

• Gorkha Tsum Valley area requires travelers to pay USD 40 per person for seven days and USD 7 per person for the time exceeding seven days (September to November). From December to August, the cost decreases to USD 30 per person for seven days and USD 7 per person per day beyond one week.
• Manang trek requires USD 100 per person for a week and USD 15 per person per day beyond a week (from September to November). From December to August, the cost is 75 USD per person for a week and USD 15 per person per day after that.
