Overview

Monasteries of the Everest Region, are the most important and spiritual highlights of Khumbu Sherpa’s. Where daily life is interwoven with the teaching of Buddha and the practice of heritage culture, as it were thousands of years.

Monasteries of the Everest Region is the heart of local culture for worship, prayer, and religious activities and events. Nearly all villages own a monastery from Lukla and to the last permanent village of Pangboche.

Besides famous monasteries on the trail to Everest base camp, one can visit the old monastery of Thame village. As well above Namche Bazaar at Khumjung village with one of the oldest monasteries around the high Khumbu region of Everest.

The monasteries are the religious center and place of worship of all Khumbu Sherpa’s. Besides large monasteries, villages are adorned with religious, prayer monuments called Chorten, Chaitiya a stupa with a series of prayer walls.   

The Sherpa follows Mahayana Buddhism of Tibetan origin, which means a greater wheel or vehicle. At present, it is one of the most popular, widespread sects of Buddhism practiced around the world, including in Nepal. Mahayana form of Buddhism originated in Tibet around the 7th Century by a great Guru Padamasamba, also known as Guru Rinpoche.

Mahayana Buddhism believes in the heavenliness of Buddha and worship of idols and the daily chanting of prayer.  In this text, we have highlighted the most popular and old monastery of Thyangboche also spelled and pronounced as Tengboche. One of the oldest, but re-built twice due to destruction by the earthquake of 1934 and raged by fire in 1989.

An important monastery of the Khumbu area, although there are much older Gompa / Monasteries at Thame, Khumjung, and Pangboche villages. As Thyangboche Monastery is much highlighted due to its beautiful location on the main trail to Everest base camp. The monastery amidst green forest surroundings is lined by tall pines, firs, rhododendron, oaks, and juniper trees.

Thyangboche Monastery/Gompa

Tenbuchhe Monastery

Thyangboche / Tengboche Monastery stands on a high ridge at the height of 3, 875 meters / 12, 713.25 feet. Surrounded by an array of snow peaks with views of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, and Lhotse towards the north. Includes Ama Dablam at a close distance towards the east with Kantega, Tharmasarku, and Kwangde, with views of Khumbila the holy peak.  

The Thyangboche Monastery also called Dawa Choling Gompa, is the largest Monastery / Gompa around the high Khumbu region of Everest.  

The origin of the monastery dates back to 1916, built by great Guru ‘Lama Gulu’ who visited from Rongbuk Monastery in Tibet. Thyangboche Monastery since then stood as the main landmark and important Gompa for Khumbu villagers.

Although damaged by natural disasters twice, at present stands as one of the most beautiful and colorful monasteries. Close around Thyangboche one can visit a Vajrayana Buddhism nunnery area, and interact with cheerful and happy nuns.

Thyangboche Monastery / Gompa is not only a place of religious activities it is also a school of learning Buddhism philosophy. Where young monk or pupil comes from all across Nepal to study, as well engaged in religious chores and activities.

The monastery stands above the small plateau of Thyangboche, the interior of the Gompa is allowed for visitors at a certain time. The main area of the tour is the main prayer hall, festooned with a tall statue of Lord Buddha, Guru Rinpoche. 

Includes idol of Chenrezig, also known in Sanskrit as Avalokitesvara, a Bodhisattva symbolizes as the god of compassion. The hall and main prayer room are decorated with brilliant religious arts and paintings known as Thanka. The main entrance with paintings of four directional guardian angels East, West, North, and South. 

How to reach Thyangboche Monastery

After flying in from Kathmandu at Lukla Tenzing & Hillary airport, the first-day walk leads to Phakding. One can walk further to Monjo village close to Sagarmatha National Park Entrance for the first overnight stop. The trail is well-defined with the main flow of porters, groups of trekkers on the road to Everest base camp.

The next day walks towards Namche Bazaar, normally visitors spend two overnights at Namche for rest to support acclimatization. From Namche about 9 km walking distance of more than 4 hours due to steep climb of two hours. Then reaching Thyangboche for an overnight stop within the surroundings of giant peaks with time to visit the monastery complex.

The best time to visit Thyangboche Monastery

Nearly all seasons of the year, except for monsoon wet times of June to August months. The best is in springtime when days are longer with enough sun-light hours, the best season for wildflowers. Especially the rhododendron of various species from tall trees to bush rhododendron with magnolia, violets, and primula. Morning and night can be cold, chances of light snowfall sometimes but most days are clear for views and walks.

The next best season is in autumn/fall starting from September to November clear sunny days most of the time, but with short hours of sunshine due to autumn and pre-winter. Can get snowed sometimes much colder morning and nighttime, but with a clear starry night sky. It is also the time for the great Mani-Rimdu festival of Thyangboche Monastery. Takes place at the end of October or the first week of November, as per the Buddhism Lunar calendar.

For interested people can visit during the winter season also around December to February, mostly clear days for views and walks. But shorter sun-light hours can be very cold morning, late afternoon, and nighttime with chances of snowfall.  

Mani Rimdu Festival of Thyangboche Monastery

Although there are other places, where the Mani Rimdu festival is held like in Thame Monastery, west of Namche Bazaar. But Thyangboche Monastery Mani Rimdu Festival is major and popular due to its easily accessible route and location. 

 Where all villagers from Namche-Khumjung-Khunde and Pangboche can enjoy the great festival, as it is situated close to their villages.

The colorful festival Mani Rimdu of Thyangboche is the biggest and most elaborate religious event for all Khumbu Sherpa’s.

Mani Rimdu at Tengboche is a colorful and vibrant festival where all monks and priests are clad in beautiful gowns and masks. Dances to the beat of religious chants and music performed by the young monks wading away from the evil spirits.

A two weeks festival, but three days is the most important part of the event displayed among the public.

The festival is traditionally held on the 10th month as per the Tibetan Lunar calendar but at Thyangboche versions. It is held on the ninth Tibetan month, which is great fortunate it coincides with the best trekking times.

For this year 2022, interested travelers are willing to visit the festival time of Mani Rimdu at Thyangboche. Is held in November from 08th to 10th.

On this day you will be blessed by the high priest Guru Rinpoche of Thyangboche Monastery. A great opportunity to observe the festival is not to be missed while visiting Nepal and the high Khumbu region.

Each and every country on this planet, have their own taste of foods as per the climate and surrounding environment. Where in Nepal is basically the same as in the rest of the world, as per the climate and terrain wise.

Nepalese Foods are of great variation as per the way people settled on various types of landscapes and climate. Most foods are attached to age-old traditional heritage and cultures that they follow according to their religions, Hinduism and Buddhism. The most popular and basic meal of all Nepali is Dal Bhat, boiled rice with lentil soup. Added with seasonal vegetables and fresh homemade spicy sauce, as well as any types of soups. Besides rice as the main course meal, Ghundruk is the pride and heritage item of dry vegetables. Which can be made into a soup or pickle, a favorite among all Nepalese people, especially around high hills and valleys. Foods come in great variation according to tribal communities, from low warm Terai belt, hills to a cooler mountainous region.  

Where every tribe has its own eating habits and taste of foods according to the region that they live in. The lavish, rich foods items are enjoyed in celebrations, parties, weddings, and special occasions, as well in festival times.

DAL BHAT (Steamed or boiled rice served with lentil soup and mild curries)

Dal Bhat

Dal Bhat, a national food of Nepal, where every household basic and fulfilling meals of all Nepalese. Dal Bhat is served as a main course meal a boiled or steamed rice of different variations. Bhat means cooked rice ready to consume, and Dal a lentil soup, can be of different types. Smaller beans from red, yellow, to green or black, which are high in protein, are added with cooked seasonal vegetables. Vegetables cooked as mild curry served with various types of pickles, sweet, sour, or hot, including homemade hot tomato sauce.

Wherever you travel in Nepal, you will never miss Dal Bhat can be quite different in way of serving. From simple, moderate to lavish as per the standard of restaurants and places of travel. In most places Dal Bhat is served with mild vegetable curries as seasonal wise, with different types of pickles and hot sauce, along with some fresh salads common is sliced cucumber, radish, carrots, lemon, and fresh green chilly. Along with Dal Bhat, one can request meat curries, especially chicken, buff (buffalo meats). Only a few places in restaurants serve pork curries, including wild boar meats. 

MOMO (Stuffed Dumplings)

Momos

Momo is another favorite food of Nepalese people, especially around towns, big villages, and cities. Although the name Momo is of Tibetan origin, actually a Chinese food that originated from Guangzhou. China. One of the favorite food as main meals or snacks. Which is popular in Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan as well in northern Himalayan areas of India.     

Momo is similar to the Chinese call Baozi and Jiaoz, both are dumplings that are stuffed with pork, beef, shrimp, vegetables, or even tofu. It is commonly found in most parts of Asian countries. In Nepal various types of momo from Big Momo without fillings just like a hot small steamed loaf. The momo can be fried or steamed served with soup like wanton, the most favorite and popular dish in Nepal. As it is the fastest food to order in restaurants or around small way-side food stalls. In Nepal, the most common momo is stuffed buff or chicken minced meats, as well vegetable momo. Momo is consumed with a hot or mild sauce of different variations. 

DHEDADO (Thick Local Grain Flour Porridge)

Dhedado, very filling food to consume cooked similar to porridge with various types of grain flour. From wheat, barley, corn, or millets flour mixed with water and cooked into a thick paste-like porridge. Popular food among hill and mountain folks, as rice does not grow above 2,000 m. So most mountain people depends upon the crops that they can harvest at high altitude. 

The only crops grown around high hills and mountainous regions are wheat, buckwheat, barley, millet, and corn in mid-hills. 

The right and perfect food as given by the nature very filling meals, Dhedado cooked with available crops. The most common Dhedado is cooked from buckwheat and millet or cornflour. Mostly the farmers and cattle herder or Shepard enjoy the meal Dhedado which is very filling and stuffed food. 

Most Dhedado served as a main course meal, served hot on a plate with soup of lentil or meats. Includes hot spice sauce and pickles to go with Dhedado.

In cities and towns around Nepal especially in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan, some restaurants richly serve Dhedado. That is with the best meat or vegetable soups, various sauces, and fresh salads and curries also.      

THAKALI SET KHANA / FOOD

At present in bigger towns and cities Thakali Set Khana / Food is available around Thakali or in a few restaurants. Thakali meals the main course can be a set Dal-Bhat with different vegetable and meat curries. Along with homemade sauce and pickles hot, mild, or sour to blend according to your taste. A lavish and rich Thakali Set Khana of Dal Bhat or Dhedado as per your choice from the menu. 

Thakali people are from Kaligandaki region of Lower Mustang areas, especially from Jomsom, Marpha, Tukuche, Kalapani, Lete and Ghasa villages.

Thakali is one of the affluent tribes of Nepal, due to its location on the main Trans Himalaya Salt Trade Route of Nepal and Tibet. Since early days bartering and trading across the border in Tibet, as well serving meals for travelers.  

GUNDRUK (Dried Vegetables)

 Gundruk, a dried vegetable soup, for foreign visitors served as a Himalayan soup in many restaurants in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan. 

Gundruk is a typical Nepalese dried vegetable from various edible plants, from spinach, leaf of cauliflower, radish, etc. Gundruk origin since bygone days the history is unknown the favorite among Nepalese, especially with the hill tribes.

The leaf of vegetables or spinach is mashed and dried till it shrinks into black or brown colors. Stored for many days or months till it’s ready to consume, Gundruk is also an identity of true Nepalese. The dried vegetable is soaked in clean water, and then cooked and boiled adding various spices for the flavor to taste. 

Ghundruk apart from making it into soup form can be prepared as a pickle adding hot powdered spices, garlic, and ginger. Including hot fresh green chilly or powder with salt to taste and add a few drops of raw mustard oil.

A national food item of all Nepalese, wherever you travel around Nepal especially the hilly region. 

CHOILA (Grilled Marinated Meats)

Choila, a Newari tribe special treat served as snacks and side food along with main course meals. Either with boiled or beaten dry rice the main basic foods among the Newari community, the main tribes of Kathmandu valley.   

Newari people are rich in cultures very religious and devoted in worship, various Hindu Gods and Goddesses. Follows Buddhism religion and culture also of age-old heritage, a blend of both Hindu and Buddhism. 

Newari people enjoy foods, drinks, and merriments celebrate many festivals big or small, where various types of food are prepared. 

Choila is a meat pickle, tender buff/buffalo meat chopped into small pieces cooked in a hot charcoal fire. The lightly burned meat pieces are marinated with various spices to taste and ready to serve along with other meals.

CHATAMARI (Rice or Lentil Flour Crepe with Toppings)

Chatamari is a small pancake made of grain flour from wheat, barley, lentil or chickpeas, etc. Also known as Newari mini pizza among young folks, baked a pancake or crepe in a heavy pan. When it’s cooked and ready topped with sliced meats and poached eggs, a favorite Newari dish. Served as snacks or as extra with the main course, especially available among Newari communities. Around Kathmandu, Patan / Lalitpur, Bhaktapur cities as well in Pokhara in authentic Newari restaurants. 

THUKPA (Noodle with veg or meat soups)

Thukpa was originally a Tibetan and Chinese known as Mein Tao (Noodle soup), popular as a main course or snack foods. Boiled Noodles of various sizes and products dipped in either vegetable or meat soups, added with some spicy for flavor. Famous in Nepal especially around high hills and mountainous regions where temperatures are much cooler.

Thukpa like pasta, served in a hot soup adding seasonal vegetables like cabbages, lettuce, spinach, onions, fresh tomatoes. Includes sliced thin meat chunks one can order with eggs on the hot delicious Thukpa with a choice of spices. 

SEL ROTI (Sweetened Deep Fried Thin Doughnuts from Rice Flour)

Sel Roti, a bread famous and popular Nepalese doughnuts all over the country around hills to a mountainous region. Sel Roti as well a national bread/food, wherever you travel around Nepal. Will come across small tea shops to bigger wayside restaurants selling Sel Roti, a type of doughnuts but thinner in size.

The taste and flavor are quite different from normal doughnuts, Sell Roti is a favorite dough/bread among all Nepalese. Sel Roti, specially made from rice flour the miniature or smaller tiny chunks can be seen on the outer layer.   

It is battered with water to make a thick paste-like broth, sugar and some spices can be added. Like cardamom, cinnamon powder to make the bread rich in flavor and tasty, normally it is plain with touch sugar. When the batter is ready a special thick iron pan is required which remains hot and warm much longer. Edible oil or fresh cow/buffalo milk ghee is added to the thick hot pan. 

As it gets hot, the batter is added special skill and technique needed to make the circular-shaped Sel Roti. Within a minute gets ready to serve as snacks or with main course meals. The bread is consumed as it is plain or with curries or hot homemade pickles. Sel Roti is a traditional food of all Nepalese specially prepared to celebrate in festivals, special occasions besides commercial purposes.

CHAAKU (Sweet Jaggery Candy)

Chaaku a sweet Jaggery made into a candy, popular around the Newari tribe community, around the cities of Kathmandu valley. Made from Gur or molasses-jaggery, a lump of unrefined brown sugar made from palm sap. The thick paste of Gur or molasses is cooked, needs to stir much longer, and then cooled. 

 After making into the desired shapes, where one can add a few dry fruits like cashew, or any smaller nuts. Chaaku is sold in wayside sweet shops in Kathmandu,

Patan-Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur cities, around Newar community’s areas.
A most popular and special treat in the festival time of Magh Sankranti, an occasion all around Nepal. On the day of eating underground roots vegetables, like Yam, sweet potato, etc, the festival is held on the first day of Magh. 

The 10th month of the year according to the Nepalese Lunar calendar is around the Gregorian calendar 15 or 16th January.   

BARA WO (Small size Pancake made from Lentil beans flour)

A famous, popular small meal or snacks among Newari of Kathmandu valley, and beyond where a group of Newar tribe exists. Bara Wo is prepared from the flour of various types of lentil grains from brown, black, green, or yellow.

Normally black or green lentils flour is used to make a paste or a batter, adding a few spices or salt. When the batter is ready cooked and baked on a heavy metal pan, similar to the way pancake is baked. The size of Bara Wo is normally smaller served as it is or one can have with curries, soup, or pickles.

Mostly available around small tea shops run by Newar people around the narrow streets and lanes of Kathmandu, Patan, or Bhaktapur.

AALU TAMA (Potatoes and Bamboo Shoots Soup)

Aalu Tama is a soup cooked and prepared with potatoes and bamboo shoots, it can be hot and spicy or mild. A favorite of all Nepalese, not an everyday course but consumed once in a while. This is why it makes it so special when you have it sometimes especially in colder months. The hill people of Nepal enjoy it more due to the availability of young bamboo shoots, where the climate is favorable.

Aalu Tama is cooked as a soup, adding spices to make the flavor tasty makes the aroma strong. Before it is served with the main course of Dal-Bhat or with beaten rice cereals or any types of loaves of bread. Alu Tama is available around local smaller restaurants around all major cities and towns, in hotel restaurants, one can request. It is best hot and spicy for all occasions from main meals or dinner, one can have as pre-dinner soup course.    

CHURPI (Harden Cheese Cubes)

Churpi also called Dhurkha in Kathmandu but known as Churpi in all parts of Nepal and around Himalaya countries. It comes from the mountainous region of Nepal Himalaya, as well popular around North East India, Bhutan, and Sikkim.

Churpi is a product from Yak milk, at present one can find made from goat milk in some areas of Nepal. From the processing area of the high Himalayas region it is made into big blocks, but late cut into smaller cubes. So that people can chew easily, a favorite chewable item of most Nepalese, Tibetan as well in some Himalaya countries. Churpi is sold in many smaller shops and stores that sell candy or other sweets. For some people, it is a pastime chewing it for a longer time till it gets moist and softens. Eventually, it is consumed or enjoyed its milky flavor after chewing for a few minutes. Most Nepali has a habit of chewing something like beetle nuts, for hills and mountain folks an alternative is Churpi.It is not a solid food or snack, it is just a habit something to chewable. 

In the western country, it’s candies or chewing/bubble gums, in Himalayan countries it is Churpi made into smaller cube shapes.

LHAPHING (Starchy Pasta/Noodles)

Lhaphing is a spicy and cold starchy pasta or noodles, made from a smaller bean known as yellow mung. A Tibetan dish, a slippery texture served with a soya sauce gravy, is popular among the Tibetan origin community in Nepal.

Lhaphing a popular Tibetan street dish, hot snacks, or taken as a whole meal, depending upon the size ordered. Lhaphing originated from China in Sichuan province which is called Liang Fen in Chinese as cold food. 

Around Nepal, it was introduced in the past decade, and getting popular among youngsters due to its hot spicy flavor. 

In China and Tibet more street food, in Kathmandu started from the Bouddhanath area, also called Little Tibet.

JUJU DHAU (King Curd / Yogurt)

Juju Dhau a product of curd or yogurt, in Nepal is known as Dahi normally dairy-based. Which is made by curdling milk with edible acid substances like juice of lemon or vinegar. Whereas Yogurt is fermented milk with the help of bacteria, it seems very similar and the texture is quite different.  

Juju Dhau is known as King Curd, also prepared as fine Yogurt, the most famous product of Bhaktapur city. A famous city and former kingdom during the Malla regime in the medieval time era. Renowned for the best curd of the country the Juju Dhau, is the king of all curds. Bhaktapur produces Juju Dhau a name in the Newar language for king curd, comes in various standards and qualities. 

All curds are available on a clay pottery bowl, the top creamy curd with yellowish color topped with nuts. Visitors can buy small clay cups in most stores and shops in the streets markets of Bhaktapur. Juju Dhau is available in Kathmandu and the adjoining city of Lalitpur / Patan also it is safe and helps indigestion.

Juju Dhau with choices sweetened or plain, which you can request as you walk around the streets of Bhaktapur city. Most restaurants while having Nepali meals serve Juju Dhau as desserts, with a variation called Shikarna. A curd/yogurt sweetened with cinnamon flavor with smaller nuts.

Nepal is a beautiful homeland of diverse flora and fauna, several national parks, conservations areas which are ranging from the lowland Terai region to the high Himalayas. Nepal is occupied by 0.1 percent of the total global area. The country has established many protected areas since 1973 to preserve and protect nature and species. However, the establishment of the Department of National parks and wildlife conservation area (DNPWC) was in 1980 AD (2037 BS) with a motive to conserve, protect and manage the ecosystem, wildlife, and biodiversity of the country.

There are 1120 varieties of non-flowering plants, 5160 varieties of flowering plants, 844 birds,100 reptiles,181 mammals,43 amphibians, 645 species of butterfly, and 185 freshwater fish from the high Himalayan, Hilly to low Terai areas. Besides this, Nepal has established and managed 1 wildlife reserve,6 conservation areas, 10 Ramsar sites, 1 hunting reserve, and 12 national parks all over the country to conserve wildlife and vegetation.

Nepal’s government has been working to recognize the vast biodiversity and save many endangered wildlife and vegetation lately. The government has been making various agendas to establish many protected areas in several ecological zones of Nepal. Efforts made by the Nepal government are highly recognized and get an international platform nowadays.

1: Rara National Park

Rara National park is categorized in the list of popular trekking destinations of Nepal. The park was enlisted as a protected area in 1976. While in 2006, an area of 198 sq. km is declared as the buffer zone. Rara national park is considered to be the smallest national park in Nepal. The main attractive portion of the park is Rara lake. The lake is located at an altitude of 2900 m above sea level. Additionally, this lake is considered to be the largest lake in Nepal due to its surface of 10.8 sq. km and depth of 167m. In 2007, the lake is enlisted in the Ramsar site. The lake consists of the water from the source of several peaks such as Malika kand (3,444 m), Ruma Kand (3,731 m), and Chuchemara (4,039m). the water drains and mix into the Karnali river and Nijar Khola.

Location

Rara National Park is located in the far northwestern part of Nepal. It is spread in two districts namely Mugu and Jumla. Mugu district covers almost 90% of the national park areas whereas Jumla district occupies the rest of the 10%.

Climate

The climate changes according to the seasonal change. Similarly, during the month of monsoon season (June- September) it is very hard and challenging to crack the visit here. Followed by the summer season (April -June) the weather remains warm and pleasant. Likewise, the weather temperature dropped down during the month of the winter season (December -March), and also there occur many blockages at the high passes. So, the best time to visit the Rara National Park is during the months of November, September, October, April, and May.

Rara national park is a sweet homeland to the 21 different species of mammals including Himalayan Tahr, yellow-throated marten, wild dog, rhesus macaque, otter, red panda, leopard, common langur, Himalayan black bear, jackal, and musk deer. Also, 272 species of birds such as snowcock, coots, and other various species of pheasants, mallard, red-crested pochard, gulls, and grebes are found here.

once the two villages- Rara and Chhapru were settled inside the park areas. later on, those villages are resettled in the Banke District after the park was officially established as a protected area. So, there is no settlement found within the boundaries of Rara National Park. local people here depend upon agriculture for their livelihood.

2: Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park

Shivapuri National park was established in 1976. Previously it was known as Shivapuri Wildlife Reserve. Shivapuri nagarjun National park covers an area of 159 sq. km in total that is 144 sq. km area is separated as a national park and an additional 15 sq. km is of Nagarjun Wildlife reserve. The park is a pivot area for water supplies to Kathmandu valley. Generally, it supplies the hundred thousand cubic liters of water daily.

Location

Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park is located in the northern part of the Kathmandu valley. It is only the national park that is attached to the capital city of the country. The National park has touched the four districts namely- Kathmandu, Sindhupalchowk, Nuwakot, and Dhading.

Climate

Shivapuri National Park is covered by the landscapes of the mid-hills. The climatic temperature of this area is mixed of subtropical and temperate during the summer season. The temperature can drop below up to 2 degrees Celsius and can rise up to 30 degrees Celsius in the winter season.

Shivapuri Nagarjuna National park is enriched with numerous vegetation and wildlife. Furthermore, the park is homeland to 2,122m plant species and includes four different types of forest. 3: Shey- Phoksundo National Park

Shey- Phoksundo National Park was established in 1984. However, in 1998 the park covered the area of 1349 sq. km as a buffer zone including many private lands and forests. The main motive of this park is to preserve and protect wildlife, vegetation, and the Himalayan ecosystem.

 Local development communities and park management teams have together initiated the various development activities in order to manage and promote the natural and cultural resources.

Location

Shey-Phoksundo National park lies in the northwest part of Nepal in between the Trans- Himalayan region. It occupies an area of 355sq.km. among conservation and protected areas, She-phoksundo is the largest National Park of Nepal. The park is extended in two districts namely – Mugu and Dolpa. Similarly, the park headquarter is situated in Palam, Dolpa and the other official site can be checked at Chhepka, Kaigaun, and Rigmo.

Climate

The park covers both northern and southern aspects of the Himalayan Crest, as a result, a wild climatic temperature can be experienced. During the month of monsoon (July-September), most of the park anticipated a high amount of rain. Moreover, the Dhaulagiri and Kanjiroba ranges prevent the barriers like landslides and soil erosion from the Trans- Himalayan area. The climatic temperature above 2500m has frequent snowfall. Local people here practice Bon and follow an ancient religion with roots in Animism and Buddhism. The park covers an area of 1349 sq. km as a buffer zone since 1998.

Furthermore, the park consists of the Shey-Phoksundo Lake (the second largest and deepest lake in the world) due to wetland moisture, the area was declared as the Ramsar site in 2007. The Thasung -900 years old monastery and the monastery which was built nearly in the 11th century are the major famous historical and religious sites of this area.  there are certain restrictions to visit the area as the individual trekkers can’t make an entry to the inner- Dolpo areas however, they can get permission up to Rigmo or phoksundo lake but the permit is allowed to the inner- Dolpo areas if there are groups of trekkers.

4: Bardia National Park

Barida National Park of Northern part was established previously as Royal Hunting Reserve in 1969 and covers an area of 368 sq. km. Likewise, in 1976, National Parks and Wildlife Reserve Act (1973) declared the Royal Bardia Wildlife Reserve and provide full protection of wildlife and vegetation under the laws of Nepal.

Later on, in 1982 the Nepal Government expand the Bardia territory by settling the population of nearly 1500 from the Babai valley. Then the area expanded from 368 sq. km to 968 sq. km. After expansion, in 1988, the Park was upgraded and named Royal Bardia National Park. In the present era, after the end of monarchism in Nepal, the park is known as Bardia National Park.

Location

Bardia National Park is located in the Southwest part of Nepal. It is one of the largest national parks in the Terai region which is extended to an area of 968 sq. km. We can see cultivated land, forest, villages, and Mahendra Highway in its eastern part. Karnali river and its several tributaries on the southern part and Crest of Siwalik range on the northern part. Similarly, the park consists of a large number of rare species.

Climate

We can feel the three distinctive seasons here at Bardia National Park Area. The climate gets moderately dry with warm days and cold nights in the month of October to March. During the month of April to May- the temperature rises up to 45 degrees Celsius. This month our very best to visit the park, as we can track the tiger and other wildlife, as they came out finding the water sources. Likewise, from June to September the weather falls under monsoon in this sub-tropical zone.

5:Makalu Barun National Park

Makalu Barun National park was established in 1992 with an objective to conserve the forests, wildlife, and vegetation. The park was previously listed as a conservation area. All the administrative works and managerial works of this park is done by the Department of National parks and wildlife conservation. This park is also known to be the extension of Sagarmatha National Park at the eastern side. It covers an area of 1500 sq. km and a buffer zone of 830 sq. km. The park ranges from the altitude level of 435 m to 8000 m above. The elevation is the main reason that the Makalu Barun National Park is listed as a protected area that includes tropical forests as well as snow-capped mountains. This National Park consists of many sacred Himalayan landscapes. The protected area includes the world’s 5th highest mountain namely Mount Makalu (8463m). Additionally, other popular mountains such as Mera Peak (6654m), Baruntse (7129m), and Chamlan (7319m) fall under the Makalu region.

Makalu Barun National Park is situated in the eastern part of Nepal. However, on the northern side the park shares the international border to Tibet’s National Nature preserve – Qomolangma. Climate

6: Khaptad National Park

Khaptad national park is situated in the Far- western region and is enlisted as the protected area. the park covers an area of 225 sq. km and ranges from 1400m to 3300m altitude. Furthermore, khaptad national park covers four districts- Achham, Bajhang, Bajura, and Doti. The park was established in 1984 with the motive to preserve and protect the wildlife and vegetation on the advice of Khaptad Baba- a holy priest of the region. There is the belief that khaptad baba migrate to the area in 1940 for mediation. Besides this, 216 sq. km was declared to be a buffer zone in 2006. The park is famous as a religious site for Hindus as the khaptad baba had spent his 50 years in solitude and later on became the renowned saint. The ashram is still located near the park’s headquarter.

7: Gauri Shankar Conservation Area

Gauri Shankar Conservation Area was established in 2010. The main objective of this conservation area is to conserve the prime habitat of endangered wildlife and vegetation. It covers an area of 2,179sq.km. It is extended with two other national parks namely- Sagarmatha National Park and Langtang National Park.

National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) has been managed all the departmental and managerial works of the conservation area, after the Government of Nepal handed over all kinds of activities in 2010.  Gauri Shankar Conservation Area has an off-beaten trekking trail because of which it is very popular among visitors who love to trek.

44.5% of the conservation area is covered by forests and bushes. Similarly, cultivation land consists 8.8%, glaciers covered 2.77%. The remaining area is covered by barren land. The majestic Mt. Gauri Shankar (7134m) lies here. This area is very famous, as we can visit different lakes, monasteries, temples, animals such as Tsho Rolpa lake, Gauri Shankar Himal. We can get to know the history behind such religious and historical places once we explore these places.

Location

Gauri Shankar conservation area is situated in the northeast corner of central Nepal. The headquarter of this conservation area is in Charikot which is just 131 km away from the capital city- Kathmandu.  It includes the 22 Villages Development Committees and covers three districts, Dolakha, Sindhupalchowk, and Ramechhap. All these areas hold their own natural beauty and importance.

Sub-tropical, temperate, sub-alpine, alpine, and Nival climatic zones can find in this region. The area ranges from the altitude of 968m to 7181m above sea level.

Gauri Shankar Conservation Area is the homeland of 235 species of birds and 34 species of mammals. We can find endangered animals like the Himalayan Black bears, Himalayan Thar, and Snow Leopard. Furthermore, we can find 16 varieties of vegetation.

8: Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve

Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve was established in 1987 and covers an area of 1,325 sq. km. It is only one hunting reserve in Nepal where licensed hunting is allowed from the Department of the National Park and Wildlife Conservation. Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve is surrounded by villages on all sides except the northern part. it is situated at an altitude of 2850m to 5500m. It also covers the part of Dhaulagiri Himal of western Nepal and touches the border of Rukum, Myagdi, and Baglung District. for easy hunting management purposes, the reserve is divided into several blocks. The majestic view of Mt Dhaulagiri, Mt Manaslu, Mt Annapurna can be seen from here.

The main major and important for all Nepalese around the world is Dashain also known as Dashera. Celebrating victory over devil or evil takes place in the month of late September or in October. As per the Nepalese Hindu Lunar calendar, one of the longest and most chief festivals of Nepal and for all Nepalese. 

Although a major festival, the event is celebrated at home with families and friends, the clear blue Nepalese sky is filled with colorful kites and the marketplaces are crowded with farmers bringing goats, buffaloes, ducks, and Chickens for selling. 

Dashain festival begins after domestic animals, chickens are sacrificed on the night of ‘Kal Ratri’ in respect to goddess Durga. Celebrating the victory over evil and demons, on the day of Dasami the main day of the festival. 

Everyone is dressed in new clothes for the occasion and pays homage to honor the elders, where they get blessed. The elder member of the family blesses all putting ‘Tika’ of raw rice mixed with curd of vermilion. 

Then it’s party time the following days of Dashain, families, and friends unite, feasts are consumed. Nepal’s most beloved festival ends on the last day at full moon, then welcomes the Tihar festival.

Tihar/Diwali Festival of Lights:

Tihar another important festival simultaneously falls within a few weeks, after Dashain, known as the festival of lights. Observed at the end of October or in the first week of November months as per Hindu Lunar calendar. 

Tihar or Diwali is the second big festival of Hindus in Nepal, also known as the festival of lights. Where every house and street is lighted brightly at night with candlelight’s, oiled wicks on a small clay bowl. The houses are decorated with a garland of marigold flowers to welcome the Laxmi goddess of wealth and fortune.

Where girls and boys join in singing carols to raise funds at every house, to celebrate another festival Bhai Tika. This takes place on the last day of Tihar, which is the day when sisters offer and bless their brothers. Tihar starts with crow and dogs day where people offers special food for the domestic animals.

The main Tihar is the day when every household worship cow as a manifestation of goddess Laxmi, one of the best festivals of Nepal to observe.

The Buddha Jayanti (Birth Anniversary of Lord Buddha):

The date as per the Nepalese calendar which falls around May in the full moon is the day ever benevolent Buddha was born in Lumbini-Nepal.

Lord’s birth, enlightenment, and salvation took place on the same day of a full moon the occasion is applauded throughout the valley and around the main Buddhist areas of Nepal with celebrations. The main place of celebration takes place at Swayambhunath and Bouddhanath Stupas, a great event to observe around the monasteries. In Nepal a public holiday for this auspicious event on Buddha Jayanti the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha.

Janai Purnima/Rakshya Bandhan & Gai Jatra

A holy, auspicious event especially for Hindu men and boys, is the day to change their holy threads with a homely ceremony. As well as visiting Himalayan holy lakes and ponds for a dip and bath in August. According to the Hindu Lunar calendar which falls in the full moon time. Where most Hindu men and women also wear a holy thread on the wrist and get blessed by the priest. At the same time, it is a day of blessing to brothers by sisters, by putting a colorful fancy paper-made bracelet.

Gai Jatra is one of the joyous events, in remembrance of the deceased person to make the departed soul to the gates of Heavenly Paradise.

The festival takes place in August as per the Hindu and Nepalese calendars. Especially around the three cities of Kathmandu Valley that including Patan / Lalitpur and Bhaktapur. The native of the valley Newar people celebrate this occasion which started during the regime of the Malla Kingdom dynasty.

Teej- Festival of Women:

Another great event, especially for women, is Teej falls in August as per the Hindu calendar, Teej is celebrated for three days in honor of Lord Shiva and the long and healthy life of the husband. Spinsters or unmarried young girls also observe Teej getting the right, good dream husband. 

Teej celebrations start with great meals and then fasting to the last days. Traditional folk dances and songs make an important feature on the ever of Teej celebrations. One can notice women wearing red or bridal costumes, considered an auspicious color for women observing Teej.

Shree Krishna Janmashtami (Lord Krishna Birth Anniversary):

Interesting to know most festivals fall during August as per the Hindu and Nepalese calendar. On the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, Hindu devotees observe remaining awake the whole night performing religious rites dancing, singing in praise of Lord Krishna. Krishna is also a reincarnation of Lord Vishnu taking re-birth to fight over evil.

Fagu Purnima – Holi (Festival of colors): 

Celebration to welcome the spring season, a colorful event that falls during mid-February or at the beginning of March as per the Hindu / Nepalese calendar.

Fagu Purnima or Holi as well the festival of playing with colors marks the end of the winter season. To rejoice the starting of spring. Where people share a token of friendship and put different colors on each other.

Indra – Jatra:

A festival to honor the rain god showing gratitude for a rich harvest, after a timely good shower of monsoon rain yielding good crops. A week-long event and festival of Indra-Jatra, which takes place in September month as per Hindu and Nepal’s own calendar. The events start hoisting Lord Indra’s flag (Indra-Dhoj) at midnight and faces of Bhairavas deities, displayed in main public places.

The main festival is held at Kathmandu’s Durbar Square this great celebration honor to “King of Heaven” or Indra’s Dhwaj, a flag, is erected on the first day. 

This is the day Goddess Kumari observes the festival from her chariot, and the public gets a blessing as well the late royal family or present head of the country.  

Maha Shiva-Ratri (Birth Anniversary of Lord Shiva):

The festival and celebration to honor the birth anniversary of Lord Shiva, the main hub of the event are at the holy temple of Pashupatinath. Where thousands of devotees and pilgrims pay homage to get blessed by the priest.

The religious festival of Hindu’s held around the end of February or the first week of March as per the Hindu calendar. Lord Shiva, the most popular god for the Hindu followers, where Sadhus (hermits) imitate Shiva with ashes over their bodies. 

Besides the main event at Shiva temples, people celebrate with bonfires and share food and have merriment singing songs and dancing throughout the Pashupatinath complex and in the streets. 

Losar Tibetan Buddhism New Year:

Losar is a new year for Tibetan Buddhism followers, in Nepal especially the high hills and mountain people celebrate this great event in their own special way.

Losar is celebrated in several ways and on different days as per the tribe who practice Buddhism. Like Tibetan, Sherpa, Gurung, and Tamang have their own auspicious day to celebrate the occasion. However, the day and the year are the same for all Tibetan Buddhists as well in the Chinese calendar. The celebration takes place visiting the monasteries for blessing, having a party with friends and family.

The festival of New Year starts from the end of December to February as per tribal wise, however, the year at present 2021 is the year of the OX and lasts till the end of the year till February 2022 which will be the year of the Tiger.

Overview

Royal Chitwan national park is one of the world heritage listed reserve areas of the UNESCO world heritage site. This park covers more than 932 square km of forest area. The Royal Chitwan national park was established in 1973 in order to protect wildlife, vegetation, and many natural habitats from poachers. The park is quite peaceful and very beautiful with lush vegetation, as you will get a view of the river which runs through the park.

Visitors can make lifetime memories once they traverse their visit inside the park. You can make a visit via jeep safari and elephant ride. On your way, you will see the one-horned rhino, deer, wild cock, deer, monkeys, langur, colorful birds species, wild buffaloes, elephant, gharials, crocodiles in the river bank. Furthermore, if you are extremely lucky enough then you will get a chance to spot a tiger, leopard, or sloth bear.

It is up to you, either you opt to choose elephant safari or jeep safari. Elephant safari means some groups of people will sit on the elephant’s back and the elephant rider will take you for a ride inside the jungle. This ride makes your visit adventurous and thrilling. You will get a chance to have an elephant bath on your way as well.  Similarly, if you go for a jeep safari then, you will have to make a visit by jeep. As it has an open back with a seat-like bench and is surrounded by metal bars, to protect you from the attack of wildlife. During your visit, your jeep guide will give essential information and a description of the wildlife that appears in the way.

Nepal is a landlocked country that is surrounded by the Himalayan from all sides. Nepal is been home to the World Heritage Sites- UNESCO. The country is been very popular in the world as it consists of a perfect blend of history, nature, and culture. Many travelers from the world come to visit Nepal and spent their time happily.

From Nepal, there are ten sites included by UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization). The sites include historical, religious, and cultural places like Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, Swayambhunath, Changunarayan, Sagarmatha National Park, Chitwan National Park, and Lumbini. We can explore the history carried out by those ancient sites. All sites consist its own features, importance, information, and significance. These sites are useful for collecting information for research studies.

Kathmandu Durbar Square

Kathmandu Durbar Square is located in Kathmandu. UNESCO World Heritage Site listed the Kathmandu Durbar Square in 1979. Kathmandu Durbar Square is famous as Basantapur Durbar Square, Freak Street. The Durbar Square periphery includes Hanuman Dhoka, Panch Mukhi Hanuman Temple, Mul Chowk, Mohan Chowk, Sundari Chowk, Tribhuvan Museum, King Mahendra Memorial Museum Degutale Temple, Taleju Mandir, Nasal Chowk, Nine story Basantapur Tower, and Kal Bhairab temple. The temple here consists of the statutes and structures of the 15th to 18th centuries.

 Kathmandu Durbar Square has the huge Royal Square Palace and it has been the main highlight in Kathmandu valley. Moreover, you can visit the Living Goddess of Nepal at Kumari Ghar. Kumari is a young girl who represents the living goddess until her first puberty hits her after then she relapses back to be a normal human and the same procedure is passed to the next child. Jaya Prakash Malla initiated this system in 1757. Kasthamandap is very popular in this area, it is still used by the local people as a community hall on the occasion of important and vital ceremonies.

  • Kathmandu Durbar Square is known to be the oldest temple in Kathmandu Valley.
  • Kasthamandap is the oldest name of Kathmandu.
  • Kasthmandap temple is built from the single sal tree in the 12th century.
  • A three-storeyed Taleju Temple is located here which is considered to be the tallest temple In Kathmandu having a height of 35 m.
  • Hanuman Dhoka which is the biggest historical place consisting of the plentiful and meaningful art collection lies in the eastern part of Durbar Square.
  • You can see the statue of Hanuman carved on the stone at the left side of Palace with red brocade canopy.

  • Hanuman Dhoka is the known to be the former palace of the Malla and Shah kings. Bhaktapur lies in the east of Kathmandu. The Bhaktapur Durbar Square was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Bhaktapur is said to be the home of Nepalese culture, arts, tradition, and history.  Local people used to say Bhaktapur as Khowpa or Bhadgaon still.

Bhaktapur Durbar Square is popular as the square consists of the 55 Window Palace. The main entry point to this square is from the Golden Gate. Inside the square, you can see the beautifully portrayed architectural building which was built in the 15th century. You will find another gate here, which is known to be the Lion Gate. The two pleasing stone statues of Hindu Deities have been installed on both sides very amazingly. There is the belief that both hands of artists were cut off right after they finished the artistic work.

Nayatapola Temple is the very well-known temple of this durbar square. It is also known to be the Pagoda of Nepal. The temple is built with numerous artistic exquisiteness and architectural excellence. You can see the statue of Siddhi Laxmi, the tantric goddess of ultimate power and success inside Nayatapola Temple.

Some facts about Bhaktapur Durbar Square

  • You can see the numerous ancient monuments which carry the value of medieval culture, religion, tradition, and custom of Nepal.
  • The living significance of the Bhaktapur area is Lion Gate, Nyatapola Temple Golden Gate, Art Gallery, Statue of King Bhupatindra, and fifty-five windowed Malla Palace.
  • Bhaktapur area is known to be home to local Newari people which is still untouched by modernity.
  • You can see several monuments, stone carving, wood carving, metal carving all over the city.

Patan is located in the southeast part of Kathmandu valley which is also known as Lalitpur. In 1979, Patan Durbar Square was listed as World Heritage Site UNESCO. Furthermore, Patan is very popular for its artistic culture. You can see the stupas erected by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BC in 4 different corners of the city. Patan has been the most ancient Buddhist City in the world. You can make your entry from the three different courtyards like Sundhari Chowk, Mul Chowk, and Keshav Narayan Chowk.

Patan Durbar Square is itself an exploration piece. You can see the Patan Museum which is regarded as one of the best museums in Asia that includes bronze sculptures and religious entities inside Patan Durbar Square. You can explore the masterpiece stone design Tushahity- the Royal Bath which lies in the focus if Sundari Chowk. You can visit Hiranya Varna Mahavihar the three-story golden pagoda of Lokeshwar (Lord Buddha), erected in the 12th century by King Bhaskar Verma. Krishna temple that has 21 shrines and the Shikhar Style temple which is devoted to the Lord Buddha is another major highlight of this area. This temple consists of 5 golden pinnacles.

  • Krishna Temple is the major attraction in Patan Durbar Square having 21 golden pinnacles in the temple.
  • You can see three major yards in the Palace namely Mul Chowk, Sundari Chowk, and Keshav Chowk.

Swayabhunath – The Monkey Temple

Swayabhunath was listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. It is located in the western part of Kathmandu. It is a Buddhist Stupa that offers cultural and natural beauty. A panoramic view of the Kathmandu Valley is seen clearly from the hilltop of the stupa.

The Swayambhu is a very popular and pivot place for the ones who follow Buddhism. The Swayambhu gives the meaning of Self- Existent One. There lies the biggest sculpture of the Shakyamuni Buddha on the western boundary of Swayambhu. There is the belief that swyabhunath was formed from the lotus flower which was blossomed in the center of a lake.

Some Facts About Swayabhunath

  • Swayambhunath stupa was built by king Manadevea in 460. It is believed that Swayambhunath was an island before.
  • You can see all the four sides of the Swayambhunath are fixed by Lord Buddha’s eyes. Those four pairs of eyes denote the eternal watch of the god towards the valley to protect people.
  • The stupa is made up of brick and clay having the shape of a solid hemisphere, a conical spire capped by a copper gilt pinnacle.
  • The stupa is located at an altitude of 500ft above the Kathmandu valley.
  • You can explore small Chaityas, pagoda temples, handicrafts in the periphery of the stupa.
  • Swayambhunath is especially devoted to the self-originating God of flame.

Boudhanath was listed in UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The stupa was first erected by Lichhavies King Man Dev had erected the stupa in the 5th century. The stupa is built to depicts the pride, cultural tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and located in the east of Kathmandu (8km away). The Boudhanath stupa consists of several names such as Bauddha In Nepal, Khasti in Nepal Bhasa, Jyarung Khashor in the Tibetan Language.

Some facts about Boudhanath Stupa

  • Boudhanath stupa is one of the biggest stupas and is surrounded by various gompas and temples. It has an octagonal base with alcoves.
  • You can smell the fragrance of incense drifts in the air once you enter the premises of the stupa. The fragrance heals you internally.
  • The stupa consists of the four pairs of Buddha’s eyes in all four directions. It is believed that those pairs of eyes protect the devotes all the time.
  • The Chorten of stupa depicts the Philosophy of Mahayana’s which is named Lamaism in Tibet, Sikkim, Bhutan, and Ladakh.
  • Stroll around the Boudhanath and spin a prayer wheel while witnessing the prayer and chanting of monks.

Pashupathinath is the holy pilgrimage site for the Hindus. It was listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The temple is famous for the temple of Lord Shiva (Mahadev). The temple is located in the east of Kathmandu City along with the banks of the holy Bagmati river.

Pancdewal, Bishwarupa, Tamreshwor, Dakshinamurti, and many more temples are included in the Pashupatinath area. Pashupatinath area is spread from the main temple of Pashupathinath to Guheswori. There is a great history and mythology of temple kali which is situated on the banks of the Bagmati River. There is the belief that the statute grows out of its spot in a unique way. Animals like Monkeys and Deer can be seen in the jungle of Shlesmantak.

Some facts about Pashupatinath

  • Pashupatinath temple was built in the 5th century. Later on, it was renewed again by Malla kings from the area, where Shiva Lingha existed. Furthermore, it is believed that from 879 AD the temple was devoted to Shiva.
  • Pashupatinath temple is the temple of Lord Shiva, where all Shiva devotees gather from different places. Mostly it is very crowded during Maha Shivaratri.
  • It is the largest temple in Nepal across the holy Bagmati river.
  • Pashupatinath Temple consists of 4 silver doors and the Bagmati river alongside where numerous people come to do their rituals and rites.
  • You can see the Cremation area where Hindus perform their rituals after the people’s death.
  • Tourists other than Hindus can view and explore the temple from the east side of the Bagmati River.
  • You can explore the beautiful wood carving, several temples, architecture, and many Shiva lingha around the Pasupathi Area.
  • Some of the major highlights of the Pashupatinath area are silver doors, wood carving, and gold-plated rooftops.

Changunarayan Temple

Changunarayan is located 15 km away from Kathmandu. In 1979, it was listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple consists a two-tiered shrine and is popular as Lord Vishnu temple. In front of the temple at the main entrance gate, you can see the lesser statues of late king Bhupatindra Malla along with his queen in an ornate cage.

Moreover, there is four stone lions guard at all four doors side of the temple. The figurine of Lord Vishnu seated on a Garuda is located in the north part of the temple. Garuda was the vehicle of Vishnu and was half man and half bird. To the west face of the temple, there lies a statue of Garuda kneeling down. The back part of the statue is engraved with important information about Lichhavis Dynasty and Kathmandu valley.

Some facts about Changunarayan

  • You can explore the history of Nepal from the stone inscription and other incarnations dating back to 464 AD.
  • The temple was rebuilt in 1702 AD after a huge fire. Before that, it is believed that the major shrine of this temple was recognized in 325 AD.
  • The Changunarayan temple carries ancient history from the Lichhavis era.
  • Each and every architecture inside the temple reflects the beauty, history and carries out significant stamped work of bronze and wood.
  • The temple consists of four different entrance gates and all the entrances are protected by the biggest statues of animals such as Sarabhai, elephants, and lions.
  • You can see the sculptures of Lord Vishnu in ten different incarnations namely- Nar-Singha Vishnu, Vishwaroop, Vishnu Vikranta, Vishnu riding Garuda, Chinnamasta Devi, Temples of Kileswar Shiva, along with other gods and goddesses.
  • People mostly visit the temple during the time of festivals like Nag Panchami, Changunarayan Jatra, Haribodhini Ekadashi, and Mahashanan.
  • You can see the mesmerizing view of Kathmandu valley from the hilltop of a temple along with the Manohara River.

Lumbini was listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1997. It is located in the southern part of Terai and the southwestern part of Kathmandu. Lumbini is the birthplace of Gautam Buddha. You can visit different temples and stupas, monasteries, museums, Lumbini International Research including the Mayadevi temple within its holy periphery.

  • Lumbini was rediscovered by Khadga Shumsher Rana and Fuhrer (German).
  • You can explore the Maya Devi Temple, Tara Foundation, world peace pagoda, Nepal Buddha Temple and Dharmaswami Buddhist monastery, Lumbini Garden, China Temple, Thai monastery.
  • There lies an Ashoka pillar which was made up of a large stone pillar in 250 BC. You can see the detail about the birth of Buddha scripted in that pillar.
  • Lumbini Carries cultural, historical, and religious importance in a significant way.

Chitwan National Park

Chitwan National Park was established in 1973 with the objective to protect and preserve wildlife and vegetation. It is the first national park in Nepal having an area of 932 sq. km.  UNESCO listed Chitwan National park as a World Heritage Sites in 1984. Previously, the park is known as Royal Chitwan National Park during Shah Dynasty. Chitwan National park is been home to numerous species, flora and fauna.

Some facts about Chitwan National Park

  • The region now elected as a Chitwan National Park was previously used for Hunting purposes of the ruling class in Nepal at the time of late 1800s to mid-1900s.
  • You can track one-horned rhinoceros, royal Bengal tiger, gharials, rock python, clouded leopard, and many more endangered and rare animals inside the park
  • It is very popular worldwide as the best national park in Asia for exploring wildlife and vegetation.
  • This protected area offers a home to the 68 species of mammals including mongooses, sloth bears, smooth-coated otters, Bengal foxes, honey badgers, spotted linsangs, striped hyenas, golden jackals, jungle cats, Bengal tiger, leopards,  hog deer, sambar deer, rhesus monkeys, flying squirrels, antelopes, tallow-throated martens, Asian palm civets, rhinos, elephants, fishing cats, and wild boars.

Sagarmatha National Park is a protected area located in the Himalayas of eastern Nepal. It was established in 1976 and became the first national park of Nepal to be listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. His majestic Mt Everest falls in this park. It falls in the Everest Region. The park covers an area of 1148 sq. km. Sagarmatha is named after the meaning sea= Sagar or sky and matha means head. It provides a mesmerizing view of majestic peaks, valleys, rivers, and glaciers.

Some facts of Sagarmatha National Park

  • Sagarmatha National Park is considered to be the highest national park in the world having an elevation level over 3000m from the sea level.
  • It offers the home to 219 varieties of birds, 18 species of reptiles, and 37 types of mammals.
  • You can track snow leopard, musk deer, lynx, and so on during your visit to the park.
  • The park lies in the lap of the Himalayas and offers a magnificent view.

Current Situation of Coronavirus in Nepal

Wonderful Good News is that Nepal and some of the world are back to almost normal life. As it used to be like in the past few years, where Pandemic of Covid-19 that shook the whole world.

Travelers must be missing a holiday and adventure around the best places of the country and various dream destinations. Nepal and some countries were the least affected by the Pandemic from the invisible enemy the Corona Virus.

However, the country was on high alert with precautionary measures, since the virus spread around neighboring countries like Tibet / China and India.   

Nepal had few cases and most infected Nepalese were migrant workers in India and its various states big cities. The Government related to the medical department of ministry took immediate action throughout the country, making space available for migrant workers. Keeping them in isolation and quarantine far from villages and crowded areas, and the country was in Lockdown.

For more than three months in the year 2020 and slowly began to release the importance of lockdown. At present, since the end of last year 2020 Nepal is back to normal apart from the flow of foreign tourists. But the domestic tourism began active since last year and still growing strong. The big question is how safe is Nepal at present from the Pandemic?

As mentioned above Nepal is back to normal with a minimum number of cases, but the pandemic is slowly fading from the country. Due to quick and immediate awareness among the Nepalese, but still wearing masks is compulsory in case of the second wave of Pandemic. Which is likely not going to happen again by the grace of the mighty lord and touch wood.

Travelers can enter Nepal with some safety measures protocols to be fulfilled as per the norm of the Government Health Department.

In the first place and step

As usual where all foreign visitors require a valid passport, at least a minimum of 6 months before the expiry dates and year. 

Where you can obtain a Nepalese visa through Nepal Embassies and Consulates back in your respective countries.

If not available, High Route Adventure will help you to process the visa, sending us your passport details and area of the visit with holiday duration.

Including the date of arrival and flight details, as the letter of recommendation by the local tour and adventure agents. Will help and support to speed up the visa processing on arrival at Kathmandu and Nepal International Airport.

The second phase

You must show a medical certificate with negative proof of Covid-19 checked before a minimum of 72 hours. From the date of your departure from your home country. Including purchase of normal Travel and Medical Insurance, which is very important as always visiting Nepal and its Himalaya.

Nepalese Tourist Visa and with transcript signed by the authorities proving that you have received advanced approval for your visa from your respective agents and related Government Tourism Department.

Travel Insurance should cover Covid-19, of minimum US$ 5,000- per person.

On arrival, and then completing the immigration formalities our guide and staff transfer you straight to respective hotels in the heart of the city.

Where need to stay for some days as quarantine measures. However, it is a compulsion to stay in quarantine for at least 7 days. 

The hotel room charge for this period shall be paid by oneself apart from the trip cost.

The Third Step and Phase,

While you are in quarantine in your hotel rooms, on the fifth day. A PCR test will take place, needs to arrange by oneself with the assistance of High Route Adventure staff in a reputed medical clinic. With facilities for PCR tests, if the result is negative then you are a free bird and open your wings for your dream destinations.

We always hope and assume that all interested travelers will have the same result of negative against the Covid-19. This is very important for Nepal Tourism as well around the world for the dwindling economy since the spread of Coronavirus. Where millions of people have been affected in the world of tourism, but there is always hope. Trust that virus soon be eradicated like other diseases in the past, as medication and immunization as well vaccination have been discovered.

Documents to be submitted at Kathmandu airport to obtain:

a.PCR Negative test report obtained within  72 hours prior to their departure from the first port of embarkation. 
b.Letter of recommendation from GoN if you are applying for Visa on arrival.
c. Hotel booking confirmation for 7 days quarantine
d. COVID Insurance of minimum USD 5000.
e. Return flight ticket. 
f. A confirmed itinerary of your trip prepared by the licensed and registered trekking and expedition company. 
g. Confirmation of online entry form of CCMC. Online Entry Form

Conclusion- Last but not the Least:

The above rules and regulations of Standard Operating Procedures and PCR system will soon be released and halted for good. Just in a few months in Nepal, to draw more visitors to awake from the sleepy days of tourism.
