When to Hike to Paradise: Finding the Best Time for Your Mardi Himal Trek

Mardi Himal trek is possible throughout the year, but the best seasons to experience this wonderful trail are the spring and autumn seasons. The two seasons have been chosen as the most suitable due to the following reasons.

Spring Season (March-May)

  • It is warm during the daytime and cool in the evening, perfect to hike in.
  • It is flanked with rhododendrons in bloom as well as multicolored wildflowers.
  • During the early part of the spring season, the high areas may still have snow patches, which will add to the scenery.
  • There is little or no rainfall, hence dry, safe roads.
  • One can also see Himalayan birds as well as animals which in these months migrate more often.

Autumn Season (September – November)

The ideal season to hike to Mardi Himal is autumn because it has clear weather with stable conditions.

  • You will enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery, especially those of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South.
  • This is also the time of festive celebration in Nepal. The villages along the way have celebrations such as Dashain and Tihar.
  • The route is dry and safe, with crossing the higher altitudes less difficult as less snow is encountered.
  • You will encounter hospitable trekkers who share your own experience at the tea houses on the route.

Note: Off-seasons for the trek to Mardi Himal are December to February (winter) and from June to August (monsoon season). Winter is a season of freezing temperatures and snow, especially at higher altitudes, which can render hiking difficult. The monsoon season comes with heavy rainfall, muddy trails, and the danger of landslides, so trekking is not advisable.

  • Lush Greenery: During the monsoon, the landscape turns into greenery everywhere.

Special Note About Tilicho Lake in Summer: Reaching Tilicho Lake during monsoon is highly discouraged due to the increased risk of landslides and unpredictable weather patterns.

Autumn (September-November)

Why Autumn Reigns Supreme:

Autumn is considered the best time of year and the most loved season for trekking the Annapurna circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek. Here is the reason why:

  • Crystal Clear Skies: Autumn is known for breathtaking views and excellent visibility of Himalayan peaks. Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake in Autumn is perfect for completing Thorong La Pass and visiting Tilicho Lake with minimal weather-related challenges.
  • Perfect Temperatures: The weather is neither too hot nor too cold, offering the ideal trekking conditions. Average temperatures hover between 10-15°C (50-59°F) in mid-altitudes.
  • Festive Atmosphere: Dashain and Tihar fall during the autumn months. The whole Nepalese community celebrates this festival, and enjoying this big festival is so much fun and exciting.

Winter (December-February)

Why Winter Challenges Even the Most Experienced Trekkers:

Trekking Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake is possible, but the challenge and preparation require a full plan and preparation. Here is why:

  • Snow-Covered Trails: Trekking at the lower altitude during the Annapurna circuit is manageable, but when you reach altitudes like Thorong La Pass and Tilicho Lake, experience heavy rainfall. Heavy snowfall and icy paths make trekking trails risky or entirely inaccessible.
  • Cold Conditions: Temperatures can drop to -20°C (-4°F) or lower at higher altitudes. Proper gear, layers, and familiarity with trekking in extreme cold are essential.

Why You Might Consider It:

Beginner trekkers should not do this Annapurna circuit via Tilicho Lake in winter. Only expert trekkers with proper preparation can undertake this trek.

Best Time To Do Annapurna Circuit Trek

Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of the most popular and best hiking destinations in the world. To experience this Annapurna trek in a comfortable and safe way, it is important to choose the best time. Let’s break it down.

Autumn (September to November) – The Best Season

If you’re looking for the perfect time, autumn is the best time for the Annapurna Circuit trek. Here is the reason why:

  • Clear views of the Himalayas
  • Pleasant daytime temperatures for trekking
  • Great time for the Thorong La Pass trek

Note: This is also peak season, so that that trails can be busy. Still, it’s the best time for an Annapurna Circuit group trek or a guided Annapurna hike tour.

Spring (March to May) – Colorful and Pleasant

Spring is the second-best time to hike the Annapurna Circuit trail, and here is the reason why:

  • Beautiful flowers along the Annapurna trekking route
  • Great weather for crossing Thorong La Pass
  • Ideal for an Annapurna Circuit guided trek

Note: Spring is perfect for those looking to enjoy nature as well as the mountains. Early March is not so busy. From April, you can expect crowds in Annapurna trekking trails.

Winter (December to February) – Cold but Quiet

At high altitudes around the Annapurna, there will be heavy snow and cold weather. Crossing Thorong La Pass can be difficult or even closed. Let’s see what you can expect in winter:

  • Very cold and snowy
  • Limited teahouse availability
  • Fewer trekkers on the trail

Note: If you are a pro trekker, then only travel during winter by taking precautions, but if you are a beginner trekker, you can choose a short Annapurna trek like the Annapurna base circuit.

Monsoon (June to August) – Wet and Slippery

Monsoon is not a good time for trekking the Annapurna Circuit trail. Annapurna region gets heavy rain, and trails can be muddy and dangerous. Landslides are common, and mountain views are often hidden behind clouds. Let’s see what to expect on this season:

  • Poor visibility
  • Risk of landslides

This 16-day Upper Mustang Trek is a journey of an exploration of a forbidden land that remained virtually untouched by the outside world until 1992.

Beyond the magnificent Annapurna Range lies the Upper Mustang journey, which offers desert-like scenery that can only be found in the prohibited Kingdom of Mustang.

Even though the monarchy is long gone and the ancient palace is in ruins, the King is still regarded as a symbolic figure throughout the area. The Kingdom of Mustang was once made up of 13 distinct hamlets, including Tsarang, with Lo Manthang as its capital.

Situated in the shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, the area has minimal to no precipitation, making it one of the driest regions in the country. People in Mustang are friendly despite the difficult circumstances, demonstrating that hospitality originates from the heart.

A distinct culture that is comparable to Tibetan culture, the manner of life in the area has been influenced by both spiritual beliefs and the natural surroundings.

Though the territories are said to remain unexplored, they are home to some of the most beautiful caves. There are cave-like formations carved out of the gorgeous mountains, the origin of which is mysterious.

Many assume that people utilized it to shield themselves from the cold, but some say it was used for Sky Burials. You can find everything you’re seeking on the hike to Upper Mustang, a place of myth, mystery, and exploration.

What To Expect On Upper Mustang Trek – 16 Days

From Kathmandu, we start our trekking adventure by driving to Pokhara, where we take in the breathtaking Himalayan scenery and verdant valleys. Our first night on the journey begins with a flight to the charming town of Jomsom, after which we head towards the hamlet of Kagbeni. After passing Kagbeni, the route proceeds along the Kali Gandaki River’s banks in the direction of the village of Chele, which is located directly on the river’s edge.

As we continue on our trek to Syangbochen, we reach Tsarang, which signifies the beginning of the forbidden kingdom. After taking a day off to see Lo Manthang and the northern hamlets of Nyiphu and Garphu, we continue our Himalayan adventure by traveling to Dhakmar and passing through the historic Ghar Monastery.

We visit the hamlet of Ghiling in the last part of this expedition before arriving at the hamlet of Samar. After continuing on to the hamlet of Kagbeni, we finally descend to Jomsom, where we once again meet the beautiful Kali Gandaki River.

Introduction:

The Khopra Ridge Trek, also known as Khopre Dhada Trek, offers a unique and less crowded adventure in the heart of the Annapurna Himalayas. Unlike the popular trekking routes, this trail takes you through hidden corners of Nepal’s majestic mountains, providing a peaceful experience amid breathtaking natural beauty. Nestled between the towering peaks of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, the trek leads to the stunning Khopra Ridge — a high-altitude scenic ridge perfect for those seeking tranquility away from the main trails.

Trek Overview

Originally a grazing and hunting area for locals, Khopra Ridge remains relatively untouched by mass tourism. Pilgrims visit the sacred Khair Lake annually, a small glacial pond surrounded by the imposing Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) peaks. The lake holds religious significance, and an important festival is held every August during the full moon, attracting devotees who come to pay homage.

What To Expect on Khopra Ridge Trekking Route

Starting with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara, the trek begins from the lush sub-tropical foothills near Pokhara. After a short drive to the trailhead, you’ll hike uphill to the charming village of Ghandruk, a cultural hub of the Gurung people, rich in Buddhist traditions and farm life. The trail continues through pristine forests and quiet mountain villages like Tadapani, gradually ascending to the open alpine terrain of Khopra Ridge.

Spending time on the ridge, surrounded by towering peaks, you then descend to the crystal-clear Khair Lake. After enjoying the peaceful ambiance and sacred site, the return route takes you downhill to Ghorepani, followed by a rewarding hike to Poon Hill for a magnificent Himalayan sunrise before heading back to Pokhara.

Extend Your Adventure:

The Khopra Ridge Trek connects well with other popular trekking routes in the Annapurna region. You can extend your journey to the Mardi Himal Trek, Annapurna Base Camp Trek, or the classic Annapurna Circuit Trek, adding anywhere from a few days to two weeks of exploration. For a shorter off-the-beaten-path experience, consider the Panchase Hill Trek near Pokhara.

Additional Activities in Pokhara:

Pokhara offers more than trekking. Spend extra days enjoying thrilling adventure sports like paragliding, ultra-light flights, and zip-lining. Alternatively, relax and explore the natural beauty of Phewa Lake and the surrounding hills.

For nature lovers, extend your holiday with white-water rafting on the Kaligandaki, Seti, or Trisuli Rivers. Wildlife enthusiasts can visit nearby Chitwan National Park for an unforgettable safari experience.

Sarangkot is famous for its sunrise views—watching the sun rise over the snow-capped peaks is a truly magical experience. You’ll also enjoy sweeping views of Pokhara Valley, Phewa Lake, and the surrounding hills.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also go paragliding from Sarangkot, a popular activity that gives you a bird’s-eye view of the Himalayas and the lake city below.
