Nar-Phu Valley Trek

So how to get to the Nar-Phu Valley? This trek in Nepal starts officially from Chyamche (Chamje) (1,430m/4,692ft) after a 9-hour scenic drive from Kathmandu, and hikes largely on the same trail as Annapurna Circuit Trek. The trail heads more north to Koto (2,600m/8,530ft) and Meta (3,560m/11,680ft) from where we start to enter the Nar-Phu Valley heading further upstream. Divided into two sections, first, we reach Phu Goan (4,080m/13,386ft) (Goan meaning village in Nepali) afterward we head for Nar village (4,110m/13,484ft) and ultimately we head to Ngawel (3,660m/12,008ft) via the Kang-La Pass (5,306m/17,408ft).

From here there are two options available to end the Nar-Phu Valley trek. One is the shorter version which takes you from Ngawel to Pisang and to Beshisahar from where we can drive back to Kathmandu. The other is a more classical and longer version, and that is to head back on the Annapurna Circuit trail and continue to Manang, from where we can head to and cross the Thorang-La Pass (5,416m/17,764ft) (one of the world’s highest mountain passes) to reach Muktinath and Jomsom. From Jomsom, we can take a morning flight to Pokhara, and ultimately drive back to Kathmandu to end the Nar-Phu Valley trek. High Route Adventure follows the classical trekking route which you can find in our itinerary just below.

Is this trip the right fit for you?

The Upper Mustang trek is beyond the majestic Annapurna Range, the forbidden Kingdom of Mustang boasts desert-like landscapes found nowhere but there. With Lo Manthang as their capital, 13 different hamlets, including Tsarang, were once collectively known as the Kingdom of Mustang and were ruled by the King even though the kingship is long gone and the ancient palace lays in ruins, the King is still considered as a symbolic figure around the region.

In the rain shadow of the Annapurna region and Dhaulagiri Ranges, the region sees little to no rainfall making it one of the driest places in the nation. Even in such arduous conditions, the populace around Mustang is welcoming proving hospitality comes from the heart. A unique culture in similar cohorts to the Tibetan culture the way of life around the region has been shaped by the landscape as well as the religious values.

Home to some of the most stunning caves, it is believed that the lands are not yet fully explored. Drilled within the majestic mountains are cave-like structures the origination of which is yet to be known. And while some claim it was used for Sky Burials, many theorize that it was used by people to protect themselves from the cold. A land of myth, mystery, and discovery the trek to Upper Mustang has everything you are looking for.

Heading to Syangbochen next, the journey takes us to Tsarang which marks our entry into the forbidden kingdom. Taking a day off to explore Lo Manthang as well as the northern hamlets of Nyiphu and Garphu, we continue our Himalayan adventure heading towards Dhakmar and crossing the ancient Ghar Monastery en route. The final stretch of this adventure takes us to the hamlet of Ghiling before reaching the hamlet of Samar. Meeting up with the stunning Kali Gandaki River once more, we continue our journey to the hamlet of Kagbeni before finally dropping down to Jomsom.

Is this trip the right fit for you?

  • The Upper Mustang Trek is physically demanding. It involves long days of hiking for up to 5-6 hours over steep terrain.
  • The high elevation ranging from 2,000 m to 3,800 m over mountain passes requires proper acclimatization to avoid altitude sickness in the low oxygen environment.
  • Bringing proper insulated gear and layering systems will help manage the harsh and swiftly shifting arid climate as winds can pick up intensely and temperatures widely fluctuate.
  • Appreciating light conditions and embracing the basic guesthouse lodging found within the small villages helps greatly, as amenities are simple given the remote location.
  • Embracing immersion in the ancient Tibeto-Buddhist culture still thriving through the isolated region transforms the challenges, especially if one is interested in engaging in spiritual retreats.
  • Eager history lovers and photographers will appreciate the striking high mountain desert landscapes framed by towering white Himalayan giants that stand from the historic Trans-Himalayan salt trade route era.

What makes this trip enjoyable for you?

  • Witnessing the incredible red gorges, cave dwellings, and whitewashed Tibetan Buddhist monasteries clinging dramatically to the cliffsides leaves a powerful visual impression.
  • Trekking through the remote trans-Himalayan mountain desert and across high passes leads you into a hidden world steeped in history and unique culture.
  • Learning about the mystical and once-forbidden Kingdom of Lo from local guides provides insight into centuries of Tibetan traders traveling ancient salt caravan routes.
  • With sweeping views of the Annapurna and Nilgiri Himalayas, the extremely dry and stark landscape seems magnificent.
  • Staying in traditional village guest houses within ancient walled cities like Lo-Manthang transports you back through time to life centuries ago along the spice trails.
  • Constantly changing high mountain desert scenery from red, gray, and yellow badlands to snow-covered Kali Gandaki River provides visual peace.
  • Completing the challenging trek to remote Mustang fulfills a travel dream through a region only opened to outsiders in 1992.
